Woman arrested for telling friend she had been kidnapped
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A woman who said she was kidnapped during a carjacking from a restaurant has been charged by police.

Officers said the woman made the whole thing up as a joke.

The incident started when the woman called a friend on Tuesday afternoon and said she had been kidnapped and carjacked at 55th Street and Prospect Avenue at the Church's Chicken.

The friend frantically called police to report what her friend had told her.

Police began searching for a victim, who they thought was being held against her will in her car -- a teal-colored Pontiac Trans Am. A short time later, officers spotted the car and surrounded the four people traveling inside.

Police found the woman driving her own car and learned that she had made the story up as a joke.

Police took the woman into custody for making a false report.

4. The presumption is though, that if you called a friend, they would then call the cops
But I also think the friend would have asked,,why are you calling ME, instead of 911..

silly silly person..

and the next time she has to call that friend for a real emergency, it might just go to voice-mail

7. Perhaps no criminal intent..
..but police did become involved as a result of this joke.. so this was a misuse of public servant manpower, and, if the police did a felony stop, it put the car occupants, and innocent motorists nearby, in danger, as well.. I should think there has to be some legal repercussion for pulling such an idiotic stunt.. being charged with filing a false police report seems fair to me..

10. Ah, ok..
..but I stand by the assertion that the idiot jokester should face legal consequences for her actions.

11. There is no law against playing a joke on a friend
So no, there should be no prosecution.

She didn't file the report...her friend did, and the friend didn't do it under false pretenses, either.

So no laws were broken, no matter how "stupid" the stunt is.

So no, the cops will just have to eat this one and then consider asking for new laws to curb this behavior (not that it is very common, anyways). You cannot just make up laws under which to prosecute people.

They should have arrested her friend, if they were determined to arrest someone.
