Assume somehow you end up in a coma , and subsequently your famous unluckiness strikes and you are in a full blown locked in state rather than a vegetative state .

Yet , you are at least lucky enough to be able to communicate with your eyes. If you make it abundantly clear that you do not wish to continue life in such a state, nor do you fathom just starving to death , under current federal laws , can the doctors oblige you and assist you in exiting this life with dignity and comfort , or will they just leave you lying there , fully aware unable to move a single muscle in your whole body except your eyes , possibly for decades.


That is BEYOND cruel . I hope current laws ALLOW for assisted death in that case , do they ?

the hospital will have all the incentive it needs to keep your body alive.

2. It's illegal, but I've seen terminal weaning done at patient request

The doc usually takes charge and administers the sedatives and the patient is taken off the vent as soon as they kick in and make him so high he doesn't care what happens.

It's the most humane thing to do, IMO, if the patient requests it.
