20. Well, 'hate' is a little strong but I have unrec't. All kinds of people unrec my stuff...

And maybe 2-3 months back I posted a little OP and BAM! Like, in a flash it was unrec't (I just figured they were some of my very favorite admirers :hug:) so I was all, "OK" and went back out to GD's pg1 and where I seen a +1 - I made it a 0, and where I seen a 0 - I made it a <0. Very sort-of, kinda, even handed, almost fair cause I wasn't all, "Fuck that idiot jerk!" or, "Ooh I hate her I bet her waffles taste like asstrays!" Didn't even *read* the OP's just unrec't them all the way down

It was really quite liberating lording the unrec feature over what I began to hope more & more were the brittle emotional states of others, and I began to feel like an antag from a Dan Brown novel MMMuoooo-whahahahaha! Oh...

I just tried to rec your's but it's too deep to save ker'plunk! :(

It's a sneaky way to get in a "jab" at someone, without having to risk putting one's own ideas on a subject "out there" for critique by others.

If I see a thread about something I don;t much care about, I just pass it by and don;t even click it...or if I do read something I'm not crazy about, I either respond or just move along. I never felt that DU was here only for my own personal usage. I understand that there are various opinions on things, and like it when people "mix-it-up" a bit, explaining their own views.

DU has done a lot of different things over the 8.5 years I have been here.. unrec is not its finest hour..

It might have been better to require a REPLY before an unrec, and then maybe a + by the first reply for a rec, or a - by it for an unrec..a blank for a reply-only. It would be nice to know if an unrec within 2.4 seconds of posting something (not long enough to have even read it) was just a reflexive "I don't like you", an oopsie I hit the wrong button, or an I'm bored and like pushing buttons".

I know it was started to be a mechanism to weed out posts that do not "deserve" to be on the Greatest Page...Do that many people here really care if their post or someone else's goes to the Greatest Page?..:) Do people even click on that page?

41. Recs are just as often used by people for hit and runs.

That's why they came up with unrec. Before, all you had to do to make the front page was say something outrageous, and a large group would rec it to the top even though the majority of DU thought it was disgusting. The primaries were the worst--supporters of each candidate would hurl some insult about the others, and all their supporters would rec it up, so the front page was a collection of "Rec if you think Obama is stupid" versus "Rec if you think Hillary is stupid" posts.

Now all of DU has a say on what makes the Greatest page, making the Greatest page actually readable and taking away a lot of the reason some of these clowns would start their "Rec if you want to stroke my ego and call someone else a nasty name" threads that made the whole place look ignorant.
