FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Congressional Candidate Robert Dobbs Calls on President Obama to End the Afghanistan War Now!

Georgetown, SC - Congressional candidate Robert Dobbs (SC-1, D) made the following statement concerning information being leaked by Defense Department Officials that President Obama will authorize an increase of troops to Afghanistan.

Dobbs stated, “The United States cannot continue to sacrifice the lives of our young men and women in this quagmire and support a well known corrupt nation. Former President George W. Bush should have focused our military on Afghanistan rather than Iraq, but he chose to lead us into another stalemate called Iraq and lie to us concerning its threat to the United States. We have spent hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of lives to get nowhere in 8 years; it is time for us to leave and let our troops come home to their families!”

• The United States Forces already out number the Taliban 12:1;

• There are 1,449 coalition deaths in Afghanistan as part of ongoing coalition operations (Operation Enduring Freedom and ISAF) since the invasion in 2001;

• As of September 19, 2009, 139 foreign private contractor deaths in Afghanistan as part of the War in Afghanistan;

• The Soviet army lost 14,427 troops, the KGB lost 576, with 28 people dead and missing between December 25, 1979 and February 15, 1989;

• The Soviet had a total of 620,000 soldiers who served with the forces in Afghanistan and couldn't win;

• The current cost of the War in Afghanistan is around $233 billion.

Dobbs also stated, “The Soviet Union could not control Afghanistan and defeat its rebel forces. We need to set a timetable to withdraw all U.S. forces and end all aid to Afghanistan. If the Afghanistan government wants to continue to use private contractors for its security and training, it should be done so without the support of the United States government. Our nation has sacrificed enough and it is time to end this now!”

According to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, May 2007, “The Economic Impact of the Iraq War and Higher Military Spending”:

“Military spending drains resources from the productive economy. For this reason, it will typically lead to slower economic growth, less investment, higher trade deficits, and fewer jobs.”

Robert Dobbs, a veteran of the U.S. Army, is running for Congress in South Carolina’s First District.
