Look what the corporate news media let slip out Monday morning...
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/11/23/national/main5747004.shtml

Almost unbelievable that the CBS Early Show let Shaniya Davis' aunt make this incredibly poignant, if simple statement:

A day after laying Shaniya Davis to rest, the 5-year-old girl's aunt blasted the justice system for providing her alleged rapist and murderer with a better quality of life than many Americans have.

"We have a lot of people … lost their jobs, who don't have health care, even children that are in homes don't get three square meals a day. But this man sits with guards protecting him, he's receiving free medical, free meals," Carey Lockhart-Davis said on CBS' "The Early Show" Monday.

See the whole video of Carey Lockhard-Davis.

Why did they choose this time not to cut her mike or muzzle her? I thought I was dreaming.

2. What are we supposed to do with people who are imprisoned?
We lock them up, we have to care for them. That's the way it works. Comparing prisoners who receive care to law-abiding Americans who can't get it is disingenuous at best.

12. No. You are, though.
What - should we lock people up and then deny them food, water, and medical care?

That's against the Geneva Convention.

15. Many of us are locked up in this country.
Try immigrating to Canada or Europe legally. Only if you are "economically desirable" will it happen. Otherwise, you're here for life whether you like it or not.

4. Thank you
I hate hearing that argument. We lock them up, we are responsible for them. period. In a perfect world all would be cared for if it was not for greed.

8. Interesting that you feel we "have to care" for prisoners but apparently not our needy neighbors.
You are apparently missing the point.

9. everyone deserves to be cared for. if we don't do something
better with prisoners, they will come out worse. That baby shouldn't be dead but I bet this was a repeat offender. almost everyone gets out. how do we want them to be in our society?

That woman also has a damned good point. She is right.

10. Agree. It isn't about treating prisoners worse, it's about treating our fellow citizens, no make
that, our fellow humans, better. Happy turkey day.

13. No I'm not missing the point.
That's a false dichotomy. Caring for prisoners doesn't mean we don't need to care for our neighbors.

I love how people with no logical reasoning skills accuse ME of missing the point.

7. I think CBS missed it, because we're conditioned to miss it.
You can interpret this a few ways - and I think people accept the inability for our society to provide basic needs, so they don't even consider the full implications of her statement. Some think prisoners should not get these basics. Some make the jump that the justice system is obligated to provide the basics. It takes a bit to realize that everyone should be assured the basics.

11. because while WE hear "public health care needed" THEY hear, eliminate the "niceties" of life
for criminals. Put them on the chain gang. Feed them slop. Teach them that crime don't pay.

Thus they don't even notice the argument for a public health care system for the rest of us.

Convicted criminals are guaranteed food, clothing, shelter and medicine.

Are you?
