Richard Tisei, Openly Gay Republican, Picked for GOP Ticket in Mass. Gov.'s Race

Posted by Stephanie Condon
(AP )
A Republican political hopeful interested in serving as governor of Massachusetts announced Monday he has chosen Richard R. Tisei, an openly gay state legislator, to be his running mate in the 2010 gubernatorial election.

"Want you to be the first to know: I've chosen State Senator Richard Tisei as my running mate," Republican Charles Baker wrote on his Twitter account. "Excited about this team."

In the photo at left, Baker stands to the left of Tisei outside the civic center in Wakefield, Mass.

Baker is the former CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and a former adviser to two Republican governors. He has known Tisei for years, the Boston Globe reports, and Tisei's years in the state legislature will make up for Baker's limited political experience.

4. Well, it's good that sexual orientation is ceasing to be a barrier to political aspirations
On the other hand I probably wouldn't agree with their policies seeing as how they're Republicans, but at least they seem to be from the pro-sanity wing of the party.

5. A gay Republican is like a black who belongs to the KKK. Why let race get in the way?
I used to have a Congressman here in western WI who was a Republican and announced he was gay, after he left office.

7. Another cheap shot by the GOP.. this time aimed at getting the gay vote?
Just like when the GOP gave the world Sarah 'I've got a vagina just like you do, ladies!' Palin, in the hopes of capturing the female vote.. I just hope thinking people will see this for what it is..

11. I dont know why it's so odd,
I've known many fellow gay people that have had conservative beliefs, in libertarian circles you'll find many. I remember one guy who had a collection of Ayn Rand news letters.

12. I almost forgot
One of the main characters from QAF was a major Rand fan. One of the things I can confidently say about gays as a group is we're diverse, more so than stereotypes and conventional thinking suggest. We're no uniform left leaning collective by any means.
