DKos' boatsie: Feeding America: Live from California: "Tag, You're It!"
My grandfather had that famous Irish green thumb and so, when he came over from the 'old country,' married and settled his young family in Jamaica, New York, he always had a farm. A plot large enough to feed not only his family of eight, but the families of my grandmother's three sisters and brother, all of whom lived in houses he built for them.

Poppop was born in Macroom, Ireland, where his parents where sharecroppers on a large estate. His mother was arrested for stealing food from the fields to feed her starving family. She gave birth to one of her children in jail.

I guess my grandfather had to make sure that none of his would ever experience that degree of hunger. And none of us ever did.
