This appears to have slipped by the major media and much of the blogosphere, but according to journalist Naomi Wolf, investigators are treating the death by "apparent suicide" of a prominent Guantanamo prisoner late last Spring as a possible homicide.
With the rush of news regarding Guantanamo, and in particular the announcement of trials of certain detainees before both federal court and revamped (yet flawed) military commissions, important stories from months prior sink ever deeper into the swamp of our collective amnesia. One such story concerns the death last June of Guantanamo Yemeni prisoner Mohammad Ahmed Abdullah Saleh al Hanashi. The death was reported as an "apparent suicide," and about four weeks later, Mike Melia at Associated Press wrote that Yemeni officials claimed Al Hanashi died of "asphyxiation." The article vaguely notes that self-strangulation may have been the cause of death.
