There have always been a number of homeless people, especially in Grand Junction. Many single vets. Shelters and kitchens are supported at large by the community. There is an annual fund raising dinner to benefit the soup kitchen where people who donate are given a bowl. This has become a rather prestigious event and the bowls are coveted. This year is a bit different. The over night shelters are prioritizing room for families first. This is leaving many single men and women to fend for themselves in makeshift hovels where ever they can. The community is hoping to erect a large tent with heaters to help protect the over flow as the winter grows colder. Wish there were better news on this front but we are proud that the citizens of our community see the need and are responding.

Right now I have George and Allyson (yeah, I learn their names and they know mine). They are both older veterans through whatever reasons have been living on the streets for decades. I can't take care of all of them but picking one or two of the more vulnerable to theft and illness helps them a lot.
One likes to read so I make sure he's got reading glasses he can use and some change to go into a cheap second hand reading store.
