As if these kids aren't on edge enough already... someone left a suspicious package and now the bomb squad has been called in.
There is yellow caution tape all over the place & she said some of the kids are crying that they just want the semester over
so they can go home and feel safe.

Horrible.

I'd say its pretty hard to feel safe after what just happened at Virginia Tech- not to mention NBC going bat shit crazy and releasing the video and photos.
My god, the horror those families must be going through.

1. We seem to be having National Freakout Week
There were probably over a dozen schools and universities in lock down today alone. To be honest, though, I think many of the school admins deciding to 'lock down' today at the slightest provocation are more worried about being blamed if they don't, rather than any sudden and particular concern about students' well being.

2. I agree
I think now everyone will be wayyyyy overly sensitive to every little thing.
I just think it is a shame that the admin. doesn't realize that jumping on this and being dramatic is
making the kids feel scared.

4. Yup. Always the same story.
Every time something happens... That something CONTINUES to happen for a while... Or at least the media finds more of the same because people are paying attention to the topic. Pathetic distortion of reality.

10. That's a pretty apt way to describe it, alright.
National Freakout Week.

Certainly fits the bill. And a damned shame, too.

Sad times.

7. First of all, VT was GUNS, not bombs. As for this "package",

what made it "suspicious"?

8. Who knows what makes it suspicious
Edited on Thu Apr-19-07 05:07 PM by LibraLiz1973
And yes VA was Guns, but now people are hyper sensitive to the idea that locos are going to try to kill them at school.

I told my niece to calm down and go about her day.

Here is the release from the web site:
Shippensburg University has cancelled classes for the remainder of the day due to a suspicious package that was found in front of Wright Hall. University Police are currently investigating the package and have cordoned off the area around the package. We have called for assistance from off-campus investigators and are waiting for them to arrive. Information on the package was e-mailed to all members of the campus shortly after the package was found. We will provide further information when possible.

That was put up about 2 hours ago. No update yet

11. Probably someone's backpack put down and inadvertantly
forgotten.

When its owner comes back for it, he sees HS crawling all over it and backs off, making it all the more suspicious.

13. Ok... here is WHY it happened....
The university is back to normal operation after discovery of
a suspicious package near Wright Hall
At approximately 3:45 p.m., a member of the campus community reported to
University Police that a box had been dropped off by a trash can near the
front of Wright Hall. University Police immediately responded and, as part
of their standard operating procedures, cordoned off the area. Police then
called for assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police bomb unit. This
request for assistance is normal procedure in such incidents.

Several buildings in the vicinity of Wright Hall were evacuated as a
precaution and classes were cancelled. The State Police unit conducted a
standard inspection and found that the box contained only paper. It was
determined that the box was dropped off by a university employee to be
picked up as trash.

All other university operations, such as recreation and the concert for
tonight, will continue as scheduled. Classes are scheduled as normal for
Friday.

We appreciate your cooperation during the incident and remind everyone that
safety is a joint effort by all members of the campus community.
