Who from history best compares with Sarah Palin?
My wife and I think Oliver North is the closest phenomena from history that we can think of. The more lies he told, the more the American public loved him.

Here's a little to remind you of those crazy times: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_North

about politicians' qualifications when we have a history of Ronald Reagan and Phyllis Schafley and Shirley Temple and Anita Bryant.

43. Well...I think Anita actually believed the shit she was spewing...which I think
makes her an idiot/moran. On the other hand, Palin is dumb like a fox. I don't think she believes a damn thing that comes out of her mouth - she just says what she thinks people want to hear. Her manipulative skills (Palin's) are profound. That is what is so scary about her.

The similarities between the two (All American, Wholesome, Religious Right, etc.) is very interesting. After looking at the pictures of Anita....well, I'm just glad Palin can't sing.

17. In a lot of ways,
she's like George W. Bush, the same lack of intellectual curiosity, the same lying with ease, the same nickname calling, the same use of the troops to bolster her own image, the same evangelicism (although I think Sarah actually believes this stuff, unlike GWB, who was just pretending), but as far as shifting all the blame for her failures to others, she stands alone.

Throw in a healthy dash of Anita Bryant, as someone mentioned above.

34. Gordon Liddy and he is still one scary mother--
But when he was younger - back in the 80's -- he was pretty good looking. He used to come in to where I worked and I saw him a couple of times. His wife came in one day. This is a public place a DMV. She had her hair in curlers, and it wasn't very tidy wrapped, with a scarf tied over her head. A house dress and some scruffy shoes that looked like bed room slippers. I kid you not. I could not believe she was his wife. But she came in the office and had ID> He was always spic and span.

61. Hey! Be nice! Miss Hamilton was a terrific actress....
that's why the witchy personna still scares after all these years!

She put up with a lot of crap in Hollywood because she was certainly
NOt the beauty queen, but always played the mean lady,
or the ugly stepsister.

I can't compare them.. MIss Hamilton was very smart,
and did herself credit. She certainly was not a wicked person
(AND by the way.. go see "Wicked" or read the book by Gregory McGuire
to learn the backstory of the character)..

But to compare her to Palin is unfair to actresses...
or even witches... love them witches!

63. I am reading Nixonland by Rick Perlstein right now
and there is a lot about Nixon especially in the early days that remind me of Sarah Palin with the big exception that Nixon was actually intelligent. The whole victimization thing seemed to permeate the Nixon narrative his entire life. Nixon used the Red Menace to catapult himself to political stardom while Sarah is using the threat of Socialism.

Nixon's hatred of Liberals and those who he thought were immoral and ruining our country is the same narrative that Palin uses.

Still, the crowds and the attention...Anita Bryant...yeah, but did Anita run for office? I'm still thinking Oli North. Remember everyone tuning in to hear his testimony, and then naming streets after him, running for Senate...Another one going rogue, on his own trading arms for hostages and funding the contra even though congress had passed a law against it!
