Legislation would offer hunters dough for deer
Deer hunters and processors would be eligible for tax benefits for donating their game to food programs that help the hungry, under legislation introduced by U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.
The measure would also boost the state's economy -- hunters contribute more than $1.5 billion a year, according to the senator -- and help with conservation efforts to control the deer population.
"I think this is a win, win, win, win situation. Four wins," Schumer said in a conference call with upstate news media Wednesday.
Schumer said his legislation creates a tax deduction for a hunter who pays to process venison that will eventually be given to a food program. If a hunter spends $65 processing the meat, he or she will be able to deduct that amount from their taxable income, he advised in a news release tied to the conference call.

The legislation also makes tax exempt any income received by a processor from a not-for-profit. If a hunter were to bring in a deer to be processed and donated, and a tax-exempt entity paid the processing fee, the processor would not have to pay taxes on that income, Schumer said.
