10. Yes, people get shot and bleed out every day
Your metaphor is a bit over the top, though (to restate), I understand where you're coming from.

11. Most hospitals put you out on the curb to die if you don't have insurance
or if they can't verify it. You should see the packed ER here in Orlando; people lying on the floor in the hallways, vomiting into trash bins, covered in blood, slumped over unconscious outside the ER doors. It's like some nightmare scene from a third world country.

25. Don't know where you get your information
Most hospitals do NOT turn away anyone without insurance. Do your homework. A hospital in CA tried it and was sued by surrounding regional hospitals. I have worked in 8 separate hospitals in my career and nothing of the sort ever happened, nor has it happened ever in anywhere I have ever heard of. You are misinformed.

Maybe you're confused, since you seem to be trying to prove your point by complaining the third world appearance of ER's. That's a whole separate issue and tied to insurance in a very tenuous fashion. Those people you call third world are our fine citizens-- some are insured, some are not. Many are self-destructive, the subset of patients that consume the resources of most ER's-- violence or accidents or overdoses or psychoses, often in conjunction with drug and alcohol excess. Often that segment of population that society has turned away. Not us! Not the ER. These patients suck the life out of a healthy working environment. And so you see what you see. People like me busting our butts every minute of every shift trying to save each and every one of them. Trying to prioritize this acuity over that acuity, only to have people like you trash talking us, accusing us of the unconscionable act of turning someone in need away. Putting them on the curb to die. Really!?!

Look, we're on the same team. I agree with the OP, but you can't go around talking shit, because that makes you no better than Them. A little discernment and information please. Bathwater goes, baby stays.

26. You do your homework:

There's a bridge that they dump them under here in Orlando. Same thing is happening elsewhere:

Miraculously, this 21-year-old patient's blood pressure held long enough for her to be transferred to a third hospital for surgical repair of her aorta. As bad as her case may seem, not all of the nearly 300,000 uninsured Americans who are refused care at hospital emergency rooms each year|1~ are so fortunate.

Whatever the outcome of the proposals by the President's Task Force on National Health Care Reform--scheduled to be presented after this issue of MLO goes to press--the issue of access to affordable, quality care is one that will be with us for a long time.

* Access denied. The case of the aforementioned accident victim illustrates the so-called "dumping syndrome." Although it is now receiving legislative attention in some localities, this problem persists and underscores not only the fraying of the nation's medical safety net but, more ominously, the plight of its millions of uninsured and underinsured citizens.

and it is delivered too late, when it is costly to society in terms of financial resources and lives.

Have you ever heard of EMTALA? Get back to me when you can actually get an opinion based on facts and not preconceived ideas.
