"Christians are the new Negro"
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 04:59 AM by ccharles000
The rabidly anti-gay Ken Hutcherson, a former Seattle Seahawks linebacker, is pastor of Antioch Bible Church in Redmond, Washington. I have speculated that "Hutch," as he likes to be called, took too many hits while wearing an ill-fitting helmet. Hutch has now turned to the stimulating pages of WorldNetDaily in order to proclaim; Church: Stop being 'evangelly-fish.' The main theme of Hutch's polemic is that gays are hijacking the struggles of African-Americans:

"It has been said loudly and proudly that gay marriage is a civil-rights issue. If that's the case, then gays would be the new African-Americans. I'm here to tell you now, and hopefully for the last time, that the gay community is not the new "African-American" community. In fact, I think Christians are the new Negro – but that's an issue for a follow-up column.

In 2005, the Rev. Jesse Jackson stated that the fight of gays and lesbians wanting to marry should not be compared to the fight African-Americans faced for civil rights. The comparison of the plight of the gay community to slavery is a stretch; remember, gays were never called "three-fifths" human, according to the Constitution, and they did not require the Voting Rights Act to gain the same democratic rights as whites."

Actually, I think that Hutch is referring to Jesse Jackson's comments in February of 2004. That aside, Hutch is incapable of separating the social from the legal issues. Hutch is correct; the struggle of African-Americans for equality is not comparable to the struggle of GLBT citizens (including blacks) for equality. They are very different experiences. However, the only people who seem to be making that comparison are a few homophobic black ministers claiming that the comparison should not be made. If Hutch really wants this to be the "last time" that he claims that gay is not the new black, he simply needs to stop making that feigned comparison as an irrelevant argument to oppose marriage equality and the many other gay rights that he objects to.

4. So, 71% to 76% of the population is Christian...
a much larger proportion of the elected politicians who make the laws are Christian, the default traditions and holidays (a Christian term) in the nation are based on Christianity, no civil or legal rights that I am aware of have been denied to Christians, and yet "Christians are the new Negro"...

He should be ashamed of himself for saying something so stupid. There is no "new Negro". Black citizens of America have had an extremely difficult time struggling for their rights and I agree that no other groups should be compared. I think that each group that has struggled to gain equal rights, including Women, Latinos, Indigenous Peoples, Asians, and Gays and Lesbians all have their unique struggles. They shouldn't be compared in some kind of pissing match. All struggles for rights are similar in that a group of people are being denied equal consideration and protections under the law, just because they do not fit into the definitions of acceptability of the dominant group. The dominant group fears that granting rights to these unacceptable people will somehow bring the society down, and yet historically, that has NEVER happened.

I was raised Catholic and so thereby I am a Christian. I am NOT a persecuted minority as a result of my faith. I am able to practice my faith freely if I choose. Being Christian has never stopped me from going anywhere I wanted to go. It has not kept me from getting a job, getting an education, purchasing anything, or any other civil activities. Being Mexican-American on the other hand, is another story...

I am really getting tired of hearing about how Christians are being denied rights or persecuted. The only thing that is being denied to Christians at this point is the ability to impose their religious practices on other citizens as freely as it used to be. Christians are being challenged to share power and accept that people of other faiths or people who do not subscribe to any religious belief, have as much say in how society functions. That is not a denial of rights. That is equality. Deal with it!

5. I'm sure most of the Whites who lynched Blacks in a week went to church next Sunday.
I'd like to see "Hutch" try to peddle this bullshit in the face of this fact.
