My wife and I were watching TV a couple of nights ago when some woman reporter
began explaining how part of Sarah Palin's popularity was attributible to the fact that she, unlike other women in politics, "embraced her femininity". She closed the piece by mentioning that Palin eschewed pantsuits, choosing to be seen in public almost exclusively in skirts.

At this point, my wife (she's a peach!) immediately commented: "Of course she wears skirts. It saves all that time each morning trying to decide which foot goes where!"

I nearly sprayed the family room with coffee!

4. Yeah, but does the zipper go in the back or on the side?
And if it's on the side, which side? So many decisions! Also.

So this is what passes for high-paid political commentary in the United States. "She's popular because she wears skirts." Uh, no. She's not really "popular" at all. Folks line up for the carnival side show, too. Doesn't mean the geek who bites the heads off chickens should be in the Oval Office, either.

The piece featured video of Hillary Clinton, Gov. Granholm and other women politicians: all wearing pantsuits.

..Because I THINK I was working in the kitchen and I can't get MSNBC in the kitchen. (Don't ask.) I was too lazy to turn it off, and it was revolting.

10. So not wearing skirts means your can't embrace your feminity?
Right. And cigarettes are good for digestion and woman belong in the home.

Did she step off the set of Mad Men or what?

15. I think it's a generational thing
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 10:55 AM by Recursion
I know pantsuits are saying something, to someone, but I also know that person is older than me. But I never lived up in a time when it was a "statement" for a woman not to wear a dress or skirt like it was for people my parents' age.

11. and, of course, a woman who "embraces her femininity" is considered too "feminine" for politics
how inane, stupid, shallow, and completely geared to the lowest common denominator.

13. This is part of the danger that Palin represents
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 10:43 AM by jimlup
If she is taken seriously in 2012 this will be part of the emotional equation. I agree with the reporter and actually respect Palin for this side of her BUT if people are capable of looking beyond the facade they will find nothing.

I have mixed feelings about hoping she's the republican nominee in 2012. Part of me says that it would represent the true and final end to the republican party as a major party in the United States but part of me is concerned that like the Nazi's in Germany in the 1930's the tea party populace does represent people with real grievances but like the Nazi's they are too ignorant and angry to understand who is really responsible and how to address their problems.
