My eldest daughter, Krysi, (now a junior in college) started this four years ago while she was in high school. It is a karate "thon" event where students gather sponsors and break boards to meet a goal. She selected three local charities and has raised $4680 through the previous three events.
There is more information at
http://www.charitybreakathon.com. Please consider donating or perhaps being an anonymous sponsor. Some of the participating kids don't get many sponsors and the anonymous sponsors give them the extra motivation. We let the younger kids participate even if they don't have sponsors. Yes, we take a financial hit for that (our family takes the financial hit), but it is worth it for the enthusiasm they show.
The charities are The Shalom House (women and children seeking shelter from abusive husbands), The United Methodist Home for Children, and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The money is split evenly between them each year.
See the web site for information on donating or being an anonymous sponsor.
I know, I know - I don't have a GrovelBot. I do have an 18 year old daughter who is going to spend a good portion of her college break promoting this event. She's cuter than GrovelBot anyway. So there GrovelBot - Pthhhhh! (What did he expect?)
Thanks, DU members! If you contact my daughter my mail or by e-mail, please mention that you heard about this on DU. This is a powerful site!
