2 bulbs burn out in hospital sign, now gives very different message
Neon Elmhurst Hospital Sign Burns Out Appropriately

It was simply a case of the right bulbs going out at the wrong time. But passers-by couldn't be blamed for thinking a smirking prankster, or something much darker, was responsible when they looked up at the neon sign for Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, N.Y., which then displayed the ominous phrase "I'm hurt."

When The New York Times showed Elmhurst spokesman Dario Centorcelli a photo of what a missing E and S had wrought, he seemed surprised. "Oh, God, are we going to get this fixed?" he wondered.

We can only hope the hospital stays more on top of the situation when patients come in hurt and in need of fixing.

5. (snarfle)
Reminds me of the rhetorical challenge from some philosophy book years ago:

To *improve* a book just by changing *one character* within it.

It was then noted how high the hurdle was. The first thing is that the change has to be syntactically correct. Then it has to be grammatically correct. Then it has to be semantically correct. Finally, the change has to actually be *better* than what was originally there.

Amusing suggestions were then given, the one I recall being:

"Ball me, Ishmael"

(Now that I've had a minute to think about it, it is apparent that the book was Dennett: Darwin's Dangerous Idea, and he was analogizing the enormity of the "task" evolution has before it, presumably as a precursor to impressing upon the reader the essential need for time (lots and lots of it) in evolutionary recipes.)

9. New York Magazine had competitions like that -- Mary Ann Madden
Their competitions were incredible, and they took all sorts of forms. Changing a letter or a word break was one form. Others types included writing in a certain style, conversation stoppers, really specialized greating cards, sayings, etc. Collected in books "Maybe He's Dead" and "Thank you for the giant sea tortoise". One of my favorite sayins, "In numbers there is quantity."

In Morgantown, WV.

They have a large neon sign that can be seen from most of downtown. Once, the "E", "L", and "M" went out, and this is what the sign said:

There was a restaurant by the name of "Shell's Kitchen" and the light for the letter S went out.

25. It reminds me of the movie, "Motel Hell."
The place was called "Motel Hello," but a burned out bulb made it more appropriate.

I also used to laugh when the California Lottery billboard on the freeway read, "$000,000,000...I'd buy that for a dollar."

That reminds me of years ago when I drove past the Mitchell Inn, and part of the sign had burned out, leaving it the "hell Inn".

32. That's great.
Years ago, my roommate begrudgingly went to work for Starbucks after working for two different independent coffee houses that both succumbed to the coffee borg that is Starbucks. Upon being issued his ballcap, which has the logo and STARBUCKS COFFEE stitched on the front, he took a green sharpie to the cap and altered the B to an F, and colored out the STAR and S in Starbucks. He worked there over two years before a manager finally noticed it. After he was issued a new cap, he did the same thing, but took out the C and EE in Coffee. I don't think he lasted much longer there after that, but he finally finished his English degree around that time anyway. To this day, I can't look at a Starbucks without seeing "FUCK COFFEE" or "FUCK OFF."
