Poll: McCain Could Lose Primary in Arizona
By David Weigel 11/20/09 8:55 AM

Rasmussen Reports finds Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) clinging to a 2-point lead over a possible challenger, former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.). Chris Simcox, the Minuteman Project leader who’s already in the race, scores 4 percent. All of this puts McCain, who has never been seriously challenged since he came to the Senate in 1986, below the 50 percent mark with Republicans.

It’s a surprising poll because only 24 percent of state Republicans have a negative view of McCain. He’s suffering from a backlash against everyone currently in Washington. And it’s been two years since McCain broke with the GOP base and backed comprehensive immigration reform. If that comes up again in 2010, as many expect it to, McCain could face real problems with Arizona voters.

1. If McCain loses the primary he will pull a Lieberman and run as an independent
Edited on Fri Nov-20-09 09:20 AM by NNN0LHI
That is a given.

Someone needs to ask Palin who she backs in this primary.

18. Does Arizona have a "no sore Loserman" law?
Connecticut doesn't have one, so Wholly Joe was able to register as an independent after losing the primary. There was a week or so between losing the primary and closing registration to run as an independent. Other states don't have this... you lose the primary, well, come back in a couple of years.

5. Not as sweet as you think
Hayworth is nothing more then a Rush Limbaugh clone, and a not so closet racist.

And most of the Republicans of Arizona, especially those who believe that the world is only 6,000 years old, will flock to J.D. like maggots to a corpse.

9. Good
Put their best right out front.
For too long the R have hidden their true agenda.

A crazy M$M R takes down the last R pres. candidate in an election?
You can't buy that kind of exposure.

to campaign against him. That old proverb -Hang out with dogs and you'll catch fleas has real meaning.

7. What immigration reform? More illegals made legal?

If McCain supports keeping the floodgates open, then he deserves to lose. Ditto making 'em all legal so that
businesses won't have to worry about INS raids.

It's time for U.S. policy to favor U.S. citizens. Those who rely on an automatic increase of millions of new illegal immigrant
customers for consumer products should be able to continue doing so. Illegals already cost US way too much...by exerting downward
pressure on wages and causing housing costs to rise.

10. Yea, those nasty illegals, let's root them all out!
:eyes:

I like the more humane approach of blaming the employers, not the employees, but that's just me.

the point of a post before automatically replying with a well-worn, predictable talking point - but that's just me.

23. I was raised in Arizona in the Phoenix area
my family was there since the fifties. At that time, many of my classmates were mexican american. Arizona at one time was Mexican territory--growing up, I never heard my relatives debate over illegal immigrants--looks like the repugs have made another issue for their base to gravitate towards. My aunt was secretary to Sen. Carl Hayden (D)--I believe, we had more reasonable people living there than now. I do know, that growing up we did have conversations about "snowbirds" coming in and changing the environment. Then, more and more of those "snowbirds" staying with no concept of water shortages or even living in a desert.

Some in Arizona now make me puke--you spit on every friend that I grew up with who were mexican descent. We never asked a friend if they were an illegal. Now, it seems, the base can easily gravitate any issue the reichwing peddles. And, I see they really can peddle "FEAR" to the base-fear of unknown terrorists, fear of illegals, fear of taking guns away, fear of death camps, fear of anyone who doesn't look like Limbaugh, fear of the other half that's not you. And you know what fear does? It makes people lose IQ points-it can make people commit atrocities.

If you were really concerned about illegal immigration-you'd heavily fine the abusers. But, no, can't go against your filthy rich base--it's much easier to demonize those who are considered the working poor. It's easier for those who have actually exploited illegals, demonize them, while using them. And, if the government really did come down hard on those who employ illegals, you wouldn't have an immigration problem.

I'm sorry to see that Arizona might elect, what I consider, another far right wacko, even over a repug like McCain. I guess that just shows how the state that I grew up in has so drastically changed.

8. Cripes... out of the frying pan, into the fire.
As bad as McCain is Hayworth is that much worse.
And there isn't much of a chance for a Democrat to win the seat in this state.

25. McCain and Hayworth
make Goldwater look like a moderate. I'd say by today's standards, the right would think that Goldwater was a damned socialist; especially since he had fond memories of Kennedy and himself traveling together on the campaign trail. I believe Goldwater was very disillisioned by the path the Republicans took before his death.
