digger phelps on morning joe
we constantly harp on morning joe here, but today he had on digger phelps who talked about what he is doing down in new orleans. he is helping to rebuild schools and talked about rebuilding a hospital by having major companies in the health care and pharmacutical field "adopt" a wing and work on getting it rebuilt. a great idea.

he also finished off by saying that the government should get out of work accountants (as an example) and retrain them as math teachers as this country is 39th in math skills.

a great idea i think

1. why do think accountants would be able to teach math?
Would you hire any random math teacher as an accountant? They are two different professions requiring two different skill sets.

give Mourning Schmo credit for going down there to New Orleans and raising awareness of what can be done to help that city continue its recovery from the devastation of Katrina.

My hat is off to Digger Phelps. Good job.

3. Yes, as an accounting undergraduate, the issue is what answer do you want?

To be an accountant you MUST be able to show 1+1=0 for tax purposes (we try to keep it Zero, for the IRS may audit us if it is less then Zero), then 1+1= "something greater then the profit last year but something we can defend if the SEC questions it" for Wall street purposes (And then for internal purposes we have Cash accounting 1+1=2 but that is only to be used internally, NOT for public distribution). Furthermore to the workers you have to show 1+1="We are losing money for we are paying you to much".

For teachers of students 1+1=2, AND that is in a PUBLIC setting, to accountants showing that 1+1=2 is simply to OBSCENE to be done in public AND especially to children, it is worse then any X rated film.

4. do you have any idea what to do if a student tell you to
"go fuck yourself" "I don't need any fucking math". How about what do you do if a fight breaks out in your classroom?

5. My Joke was on Accountants NOT teachers....
I was just pointing out that an accountant could come up with three different figures depending on what the figures was to be used for (Taxes, investors and internal use). It was not an attempt to attack teachers. Anyway I went to an inner city school so I saw idiot students like you point out. I was just attacking the idea of Accountants teaching math NOT teachers.
