And do you know why the Psalmist is calling down such horrid curses on the leader's head?

And do you know why the Psalmist is calling down such horrid curses on the leader's head?
From "Southern Beale":

According to my NRSV, the Psalmist says at 109:16--

For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and brokenhearted to their death.

And at 109: 30-31, the Psalmist concludes--

With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise him in the midst of the throng. For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save them from those who would condemn them to death.

I think the TaliGOP and the fundies need to think about who "didn't remember to show kindness." They need to look at their comments just in the health care reform debate and consider who "pursued the poor and needy and brokenhearted to their death."

I remember the one man who was told to go to the ER when he said he was dealing with major depression and his insurance had been stopped. That's just one instance of their coldheartedness.

Then there was the teabag sign that said "compassion isn't compulsory." I think that Psalm was aimed right at them and their leaders.

2. To the GOP ultimate Kindness is "Tough Love"
Make them do it on their own and they will appreciate it more, is how they put it..as if any of them ever did anything on their own.

3. On the principle that religion is a primitive manifestation of our understandings of the
physical world (like mythology), I have been wondering if this psalm couldn't be looked at as an expression of an intuitive understanding that if we do not take care of one another, if we do not care for the least amongst us, there is no hope of survival for anyone. Could this psalm be an expression of the physically intuitive understanding that if we do not remember to show kindness, systems will become such that everything will collapse (e.g. global climate change) and kill not only us but future generations too.

8. go to Genesis 6 and when God asks Cain where his brother is, he
says, "What am I? My brother's keeper?" And that is the ethical and moral essence of the entire bible and all religious thought. We are our brother's keeper. The psalmist was reiterating what is truest of the true.

11. That's exactly what it is all about and, aside from The Truth and worthy, therefore, of our
unconditional commitment in the same manner as we see in the life of Yeshua, anything else is, sooner or later, directly or indirectly, SUICIDE.

5. Thanks - after all the threads about it yesterday I intended to locate my
bible to find the entire verse to see what it really said, but I forgot to. You KNOW fundies take everything out of context.

6. It's nothing new.
They seem to overlook all the parts where Jesus healed the sick and told others to do likewise, and where he told the man that if he wanted to go to heaven he should sell everything he had and give it to the poor.

If you walk into a Christian church today, no one's going to expect that you make a commitment to sell all your possessions. But there are some that exemplify their beliefs in caring for people with action, and others that just teach that if you're rich and prosperous, it's proof from God that you're doing everything right.
