Poll question: How do you like your Obama?
Seems to me a lot of people around here want Obama to be as nasty as Bush... they want him to do evil, underhanded things just to get things done. Fuck principles... take it all back! What do you think?

26. Very good question!
In DUers and DU as a whole. There has been so much whining, moaning, and groaning lately, I'd begun to think that most DUers had lost faith in good that comes from taking the high road and doing the right thing. It seemed to me that many here were insistent that Obama be as brutally greedy and selfish as the last administration. That broke my heart. I don't want to be associated with people who are so negative that they feel the end justifies the means. I don't want Obama to be anything like Bush and his cronies. This poll helped me to see that I'm not as alone as I thought I was.

From my POV, BushCo set the US on course to go over the Niagara Falls in an oceanliner... that we haven't crashed onto the rocks below is a miracle. That gives me faith that the current administration is doing something right. We don't have Obama's perspective, nor do we have his sources of intelligence.

This doesn't mean I agree with everything Obama has done or said. I think there are areas where he can be a lot tougher, but I think this first year of his first term really needed to be a laying of groundwork, a foundation of doing the right thing by at least attempting to get ALL of the people together on issues. I don't expect years 2 through 4 to be anything like year one... and universe willing, his next four years will be even better. If he doesn't try, we have no high ground whatsoever. Slow and cautious is ok by me... year one.

I pray to no one, however. I do put thoughts and hopes and dreams out to the universe. If there is a benevolent great spirit out there, I'm sure she will forgive me my naivete in such matters. I was raised a Fundy... out 30 years, and still recovering:)

41. He is not taking the high road; he is caving to the corporate and to Republicans.
In the health care bill, insurance companies are the prime beneficiaries. Obama has done NOTHING to rein in the Blue Dog assholes and assure TRUE health care reform. On the economy, he has done nothing but cave to his corporate cronies he appointed to the Fed and other positions.

Obama is a complete pushover milquetoast. He has no spine (like every other elected Democrat, with a few exceptions).

19. cut throat, hold the evil. Are DC Dems really so dense they don't see the difference between...
taking of the gloves for a good cause and being as evil as Bush?

Obama doesn't even have to be rude. He just has to say, ''This is what we are going to do, if some Republicans want to join us, great. If not, it's their loss," and then with the Blue Dogs, be a little more direct, ''Does Wayne Brady hafta choke a Max Baucus?''

He's trying to get cooperation here. If he just ran roughshod over everyone from the beginning, he would be viewed as nothing less than another Bush. If you don't at least try to get others to buy into the conversation, you have no high ground from which to throw stones.

faith healing who said he didn't, would you seek a bipartisan solution,or just take your aunt's advice on how to make cupcakes and leave your kid to the doctor?

We have cancer. And the GOP is not just the nutty faith healing aunt, they are the convenience store clerk who sold us the cigarettes that gave us cancer.

There are no grey areas between the questions, and there's always the choice not to vote, but to give comment instead.

Unless some are unwilling to admit that the actions they want are really Bushian in nature. Revenge isn't a good way to force change. Attempts to get a buy in puts solid footing on higher ground.

that is a DU standard for professional poll making...

I voted positive on your poll...... its still a push poll

Push-polls are designed to shape, rather than measure, public opinion and simplistic in nature.

27. He needs to be more aggressive...
More Americans approve of Obama that of any party in Congress (or Congress as a whole, for that matter), and I think part of the cause behind his drop in the polls are some of his supporters who are growing disgruntled and impatient for the Change that was promised in the campaign.

Obama seems to be pursing some variation on Nixon's "Rose Garden" strategy where he rarely ventures out of the White House. That's not Obama's style, and that's not what got him here. His is an eloquent voice for moral leadership, and we need to hear that voice more often.

34. I agree with most of that...
And like I've said, I expect years 2 - 4 to be quite different. But I don't think his efforts to get a buy in across the aisle can go unnoticed. Had he rushed in and just went wild with changes, he would have been no better than Bush. We're still floating, which is a miracle. That there is still food on store shelves, petrol at the corner gas, and mail being delivered is a miracle. That we don't have twice the number of homeless and starving is a miracle. Yes, it's bad, and I think of that constantly, but it could have been so very much worse.

and I applaud his attempts to achieve any degree of bi-partisanship. But it's pretty clear by now that the other side isn't interested in compromise -- now is the time when he should return to "campaign mode" and close the deal on health care reform. America wants this. America needs this.

37. I agree...
And I always figured the first year, which is almost over, would be the time to try. I'm betting he's growing weary of it himself. But a good, solid year of trying is a great foundation on which to build the rest. There's plenty of opportunity to say, no, we tried it that way, you snooze, you lose.

61. over easy, sunny side up
this poll needs more choices. All it has is A+ or D- and F. I think it is more of a mixed bag. I'd give him a B on the stimulus bill and maybe a B- for his efforts on health care and Iraq. Sosotmayor was a solid A, but she replaced the liberal Souter, so it's not really a gain (but imagine what would have happened with President McCain).

As far as wanting him to be as nasty as Bush, they/we do want him to fight for liberal principles and policies at least as hard as Bush/Republicans fight for Conservative ones. Inastead it's like the rhetoric promises us ten liberal apples, but then that drops to 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, and more apples are dropped in order to appease the conservatives until finally we seem to have to fight like hell just to get one slice of a pear, and we really don't like those apples. (Of course, others of us seem to think we were promised a new Corvette or something (like single payer health insurance) even though we never were.
