Top Safety Picks: Chrysler 4, Toyota 0
Top Safety Picks: Chrysler 4, Toyota 0

Four Chrysler vehicles were named Top Safety Picks for 2010 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety while Toyota failed to place a single car or truck on the list. Chrysler also had more domestic models on the list than either Ford or General Motors.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Picks for 2010

Nineteen cars and eight SUVs earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award for 2010.

The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job in the institute's tests of protecting people in front, side, rear and rollover crashes.

Subaru was the only car manufacturer to have winners in all four classes in which it competes. The manufacturer won five awards overall for 2010.

Ford and its subsidiary, Volvo, won six awards, compared with Volkswagen's and Audi's five, and Chrylser's four.

Cars from the largest automakers, however, were noticeably absent. A news release issued by the Insurance Institute noted that while Toyota and its Lexus and Scion subsidiaries did well in 2009 with 11 award winners, they were completely shut out this year.

Gee, now when when your Toyota unintentionally accelerates, you have to worry about it rolling over.

5. After what I paid out for repairs in the mid 90's they should have improved.
I'm glad they're more reliable, but I'll never buy another one.

17. The good reason would be not to give an entity that has fucked you over another chance.
Fuck me once, shame on you, fuck me twice shame on me.

The executives at Chrysler made a conscious decision to fuck over their customers by building and selling shoddy products.

Note that I'm *not* blaming the workers, it is not the workers who make the decisions about how things are going to be made.

Now hopefully they will go more than 100,000 miles, keep their resale value and get excellent gas mileage as well.

6. REPORT: Toyota may 'shorten' gas pedals to fix unintended acceleration issue
REPORT: Toyota may 'shorten' gas pedals to fix unintended acceleration issue

The Toyota "unintended acceleration" issue has been a hot-button topic for nearly two months, with the Japanese automaker working closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association to come up with a permanent solution to the growing problem. Toyota recently published a statement to address the issue, stating it would "take a closer look at the potential for an accelerator pedal to get stuck in the full open position due to an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat."

Inside Line and Kyodo News are reporting that Toyota may be close to announcing that they will shorten the gas pedal of the four million vehicles affected by the recall.

WHY DOESN'T THE GREAT TOYOTA FIX THE REAL PROBLEM?

Toyota - Shrinking Gas Pedals Is Only a Partial Solution

Toyota will soon announce a plan to voluntarily repair the accelerator pedals in a variety of late-model Toyota products, the idea being that shrinking and re-shaping the gas pedals will reduce the chance that their vehicles will careen out of control because of a stuck floor mat.

Too bad this is only a partial solution. While making the gas pedal smaller certainly won't hurt, the REAL solution is to upgrade the engine management computer so that it includes a "brake to idle failsafe," a system found on competing models from Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz.

8. The safest car on blocks!
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 08:37 PM by hughee99
My last car was a chrysler, I drove it for 8 years, I had to get the usual stuff done, but no major issues with it. I had a Ford before that for 18 months and got 3 recall notices (1 after I totaled it when 2 tires blew out at the same time on an interstate).

I recently came back to Ford because, well, maybe I'm a masochist, I don't know. I've had the car since July. 1 recall notice already.

All in all, my chrysler was pretty safe.

18. I've been pleased with my two Volkswagens
I had a Beetle TDI that I traded in for the Tiguan. Before that I had a Caviler and I treated that car like crap, but it was a trooper. I had a Pontiac Sunbird before that, also a good car. Never had problems with it. Would have driven it for a few more years, but a lady decided to run a red light and she totaled the Sunbird out.

I test drove a Ford Escape when I was looking for a new vehicle, but in the end I preferred the Volkswagen. I've never been much of a fan of Japanese vehicles.
