Video lecture about diets/weight loss
Since there have been a lot of weight loss threads recently, I thought I'd post this video lecture I came across a while ago. It's about a Stanford study comparing several weight loss programs, including Atkins and some low-fat diets.

Briefly, the outcome of the study is that all of the diets worked to different degrees, and Atkins worked best. But the lecture is about more than just this one study, there's a lot of interesting discussion of other studies and various diet-related topics, particularly in the Q/A part at the end. Also, the obesity maps at the beginning are startling.

By the way, as a disclaimer, I'm not taking a side in the "obesity wars", I just thought I'd share what I think is an interesting lecture.

2. If you look at the steady state of Atkins

It's lean-ish proteins and the greenest vegetables possible.

That's the cornerstone of any healthy diet. Any one. People who bag on the Atkins diet either have an axe to grind against meat eating, or they don't get that.

5. True. Lean meats, vegetables and a small amount of fruits are best.

3. THanks leading edge and now they are looking at more
than just diet... insulin resistance is a hot topic now.

4. I also found some of the studies he mentioned at the end very interesting.
For example, they looked at several thousand people who had lost 30+ pounds and kept it off for 5+ years, and the found that the thing that they had most in common was that they did an hour of exercise a day. It's not clear what that means, but it's still noteworthy.

Another study found that, when people were offered food in smaller portions and lower energy density (but told to each as much as they want), they ended up eating 800 less calories per day (wow!) without feeling any hungrier.
