Hey Skinner, it's time to close down your Cafe Press store!
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 05:03 PM by Renew Deal
From Cafe Press:

Dear Michelle,

Thank you for contacting CafePress.com!

Cafepress looks at content on a case by case basis, and makes decisions about what content is permissible based on our content usage policy.

Anti-presidential gear has been a mainstay at Cafepress since we were founded in 1999 and has become a key component of political discourse. Our site has become a cultural barometer of public opinion and as such designs often come into question. In managing our content we are trying to protect self expression, while making sure we are not advocating violence.

We initially pulled the Psalm 109:8 content from our products today because broader media dialog indicated that these designs potentially suggested violence towards the president. Based on current public discourse and further review of the actual content, we have determined that it is fair political commentary and we are in the process of reinstating this merchandise. As with all of our content, these designs will continue to be reviewed and if at any time their meaning is construed as advocating violence we will revisit our decision.

Your ticket code is LTK419085799243X. Please use this code in any further communication.

Best Regards,

Margene H.

breaking many laws, including US laws against torture, and for lying repeatedly to launch a war of aggression against a country and its people who never attacked US (and who didn't represent any credible threat to the US). In fact, people here still want them to be arrested and charged for true justice must prevail.

and that's the people you're speaking to. these t-shirts are speaking to people such as the one who murdered a doctor in a church, or the one who firebombed abortion clinics, the one who bombed the federal building in OK, etc. this type of rhetoric is recognized for what it is by liberals, but wingnuts, many of whom are simply itching for a fight, take it as a call to arms, and are likely to act upon it. that's a big difference imo.

72. That's not what the OP is about if I read it correctly.

As I understand it, cafe express allows people to create items (shirts, hats, mugs, etc) with images or text and sell them. Is this not so. I see them like a public forum where people can express themselves and, yes, sometimes those views are vulgar, demeaning, and not to my liking.

The OP was this Psalm reference which does seem like fair political discourse. If hanging a politician in effigy is ok, then sure some abstract notion that a politicians "days be few" is ok.

Boycott what you want.

83. So you think that racism and threats against the President's life are ok.
Are you sure you are in the right place here? Where as expressing racism is permitted by the Constitution, I dont have to accept it and can and will boycott. As for the threats against the President's life, that is against the law. But you go ahead and enable your racist, teabagging friends.

Couple of other things, I didnt condone hanging a president in effigy as you imply as a lame justification for your accepting racism. And I hope you dont think that the Psalm reference is a clever way of avoiding direct responsibility for calling for the assassination of the President.

86. I am most definitely in the correct place -- are you?

As a liberal, I am compelled to accept that there are people who view the world very differently from me and unless they break the law, I will tolerate them even as I argue against their positions or rhetoric.

I won't boycott Cafepress for the same reason I won't boycott Barnes and Noble for selling Mein Kampf. You are free to do as you wish, of course. I didn't expect otherwise.

I did not imply that YOU condoned hanging a politician in effigy, I implied that I condoned it. Its protected political speech. And so is the Psalm reference regardless of your worst fears.

You have yet to answer my question. Do you think it is acceptable for a business to sell products that advocate the assassination of the President? Would you do business with such a company?

89. Ok...

I need to change your questions a bit because products cannot advocate for anything. Products are not agents, but persons and people can advocate.

It is not acceptable for a person or company to advocate for the assassination of the President.

I wouldn't do business with a person or company that advocated for the assassination of the President.

The psalm 109:8 reference does not advocate for the assassination of the President, per se. It is political rhetoric akin to hanging a politician in effigy.

For example, if Barnes and Noble sold books with hateful speech toward the President, I wouldn't boycott BN because they are not advocating for dangerous or illegal behavior.

wear a button. It makes identifying the loons that much easier. If I see one around here, you can be sure that I'll ask the goomer just why they wish the president dead, would they have the guts to pull the trigger?...actually no, they are cowards, hiding behind obscure Bible verses, hoping someone crazier than them will do something horrific.

I despise bush w/all of my being, but the thought of doing him harm never entered my mind...and killing him is so far out there, even Charlie Manson wouldn't go there...(and he's about as far out there as anyone can get!)

These people are sick, deluded knuckle draggers, soon they will realize they have an opposable thumb, that is the time to start worrying...:D

46. Agree. I thought we were going to stop patronizing that site a while ago.
They've had violent dog whistle shirts about Obama for a while now.

51. Think it is ... just clicked on 'Store'
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 09:42 PM by sjdnb
and, not found. http://www.cafeshops.com/du_store

Big assumption here that cafeshops is cafepress, but thought I'd share.

If anyone knows for sure that DU did respond and shut down their CafePress store I will donate $50 bucks to DU (yeah, I know not a lot, but a lot for me) tonight. I was waiting for Friday, but, hey, one good turn ....

52. I'm trying to close my account there right now
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 10:26 PM by ThoughtCriminal
I've had an account for over 9 years. Made some decent money in the early days. The only thing stopping me right now is that the javascript on the close account page does not seem to be working when I click on the Close Account button.

Edit:

Done. Had to switch from Chrome to I.E.

I wonder if they are being swamped with cancellations? I sure hope so.

57. ****GOOD NEWS**** DU is closing CafePress Store.
On another thread an Admin said that the DU Store would be closed within the hour. I hope a lot of other big accounts do the same.

63. It was time a long time ago. They sell sweatshop merchandise.
Even their US-made shirts are American Apparel, and that company has a long track record of union busting and sexual abuse of female employees.

But nothing got done when people posted threads about that problem or took that concern to Admin. :eyes:

68. Maybe we should send them the law.
"Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

77. !!! I have spent over a thousand dollars on Cafe Press and Zazzle !!!
for mostly t-shirts, but mostly from Cafe Press. I buy Cthulhu, zombie, ethnic pride, liberal leaning, and Star Trek (the original). They will be hearing from one of their best customers, believe you me. And it won't be pretty.
