Levity Dept.: Best dental story of the year...
this just happened: I asked a patient to replace her own partial denture because she has real flabby mucosa in the cheek area and it's real easy to grab it with the clasps, so generally I have the patient do it. Well, she was fumbling around and she said, "It's just like trying to place your diaphragm while your gynecologist is watching."

I had never heard that in over 30 years of pracitce...I believe I have finally heard everything.

After I finished turning about 4 colors of red, she reiterated her point all over again and I replied with the well-worn dental cliche..."Well, let me know which office you'd rather be in so I know how to adjust the chair."

Great visit...

10. Likely as not...
I have many.
That's not conceit...many people project - I happen to be helping people thru bad time(s), caring, concerned, unselfish, not money-oriented, genuinely interested in their lives, and seemingly ever-present. That's more than many people get from their spouses/partners.

Oh and one more thing...I am utterly and totally unavailable and off the market.

4. great one!
thanks for posting.

Now, I have a question for you

was it once a normal practice for dentists to put dentures into childrens mouths back in the 50s and 60s when their parents couldnt afford to have kids teeth straightened?

13. actually
taking out all of the childs teeth as a cheaper alternative to getting them braces, and putting full dentures into their mouth. just wondered if this was once done as a norm.

14. NO!!!!!!!!!!
Not EVER...EVER EVER EVER.

Never have I seen this once for a child who is not the subject of significant anatomical birth defects.

There are some rare conditons which would call for this PERHAPS, such as dentinogenesis imperfecta in extremis, certain kinds of cleft lips and palates (very unusual - in fact I worked at a famous cleft palate clinic and only saw this done once)

Hope this answers your question...

(no birth defects, just crooked teeth as a child)
parents couldnt afford braces. remember, this was 1963

16. Barbaric dentistry....
no question...you are a victim unless you had complete decay of all your primary teeth by the age of 4. unlikely...Ive only seen a few cases like that and for that, I've never heard anyone present a treatment plan such as you describe...

17. thanks. I had no decay, just crooked teeth.
had all the teeth pulled, and he shoved the dentures onto my gums as they were healing. I was a kid, I didnt know any better.
Now that Im almost 60, its okay to have them I guess.

I always wondered why anyone would do that to a kid.
Of course, Im used to it now.

hugs and thanks for the answers

12. Other than the obvious physical discomfort, I have a great time with my dentist...
He loves to relate the story of how I picked him 25 years ago. Opened the yellow pages, closed my eyes, and stabbed the page. He was the lucky winner.

Once, when he was giving me a shot, he told me I might feel a little prick. I replied that it was ok; having been married to the same man for so many years, I had gotten used to it.
Needless to say, he never warned me about the needle in those same words again.
