Los Angeles Times: Students seize UCLA building over fee hike
Students storm UCLA building to protest expected UC system fee increase
November 19, 2009 | 7:17 am

About 30 students stormed UCLA’s Campbell Hall and barricaded the doors with chains and bike locks early this morning to protest a student fee increase that is expected to be endorsed by the University of California’s Board of Regents today.

Students who spent the night were sprawled outside Campbell Hall in sleeping bags. They carried posters and signs that read, “Don’t take our education away” and “Don’t privatize, democratize.” Many wore bandannas over their faces.

Dozens of other students spent the night camped out in tents on top of Parking Structure 4. Hundreds of other students are expected to join the protesters and demonstrate at the UC Regents meeting that will take place later today.

The proposed two-step student fee increase would raise UC undergraduate education costs more than $2,500, or 32%.The annual cost of a UC education, not including campus-based fees would rise to $10,302. ...........(more)

1. I've just got to say, that....
$10K a year for tuition & student fees is still a pretty damn good deal for a top-rate public education.

2. That's all well and good, but CA has a $20B+ deficit

It's not like we can stop building battleships. Something has got to break, at some point.

Rake me over the coals, but I can more easily stomach a rate increase for colleges than I can stomach a poor person losing what's left of their state benefits.

4. We can't stop building battleships?

I suppose that means we can't possibly start solving all the problems we have unless we spend more more more to put more more more weapons systems in place. We are only equipped to pound the planet to smithereens about 100 times now, and apparently that's not apocalyptic enuf for you Dreamer T.

I think you need not to be raked over the coals, but to rather to be raked into reality.

5. California has weapons systems? I didn't know that.

I bet with all our coastline, California has a hell of a Navy. We could wipe Oregon right off the map, I bet. And it's always good to mass those California troops on the Arizona border...I hear Arizona might launch an invasion sometime soon. I think our tanks are better suited for desert warfare than theirs, however.

Seriously, you should think before you post asinine responses.
