LOS ANGELES, November 18, 2009 - UC Regents held their second day of meetings on the UCLA campus today. Demonstrations both inside the meeting and outside the building went on throughout the day. At one point civil disobedience action inside brought a temporary halt to the meeting. At least a dozen students were arrested today during the protests.

1. Fight Back News.. repots on UCLA protest
Protests Rock Meeting of University of California Regents

http://www.fightbacknews.org/

While they wait for the others to arrive, the students at UCLA attend workshops to discuss the broader struggle for public education, from privatization of K-12 education to the struggle for adequate resources for community colleges. Slam poets and improv rappers connect the UC budget crisis with the illegal wars that the U.S. is waging in foreign countries and the economic crisis that has caused millions to lose their jobs and homes across the country. This is Crisis Fest: a political gathering and protest event to kick off the protests set for the coming days.

The tent city and Crisis Fest convention follow a day of mass protest Nov. 18 where hundreds of students pushed past the barricades to where the UC regents were meeting. The protesters were met by repression, as police declared the assembly 'unlawful' and violently pushed the students back. The police used Tasers on several students and arrested 14 others. Those who were arrested staged a civil disobedience action inside the committee meeting where the tuition hike was agreed upon, singing We Shall Overcome until they were removed.

Despite the mass protests, the UC regents voted to increase tuition 32% for the spring semester. This increase is just the beginning, as another tuition increase is planned before the fall semester next year.

But it is clear that they will not be able to do it without a fight from the community. Students, faculty and staff of the University of California system are coming together to stand in solidarity and fight back against the budget cuts.

"These students deserve to have the same public education I enjoyed," said Lauren Anderson, who is a recent graduate from UCLA's masters program. "If they had wanted the price tag of a privatized university they would have gone to USC . I am in complete solidarity with them."

On Nov. 19 the protest starts back up bright and early. "The regents have to know that we aren't going anywhere," says Janet Ramer, a UCLA staff member. "We are not going to just stand by while they cut our pay."

3. I benefit from Public College and so did much of my family. Please share with others
I have a cousin who is at UCLA and I hope he takes time to join a protest. There are protests happening up and down the state at the UC's and that STate Colleges. If they can break the strangle hold by the Conservative/Corporatism in CA, it will be a great day in CA, and hopefully will turn the tide. Except for a couple years in 2000-2002, there has been a Republican Gov in CA since I can remember and it has destroyed CA.
Here is what I sent out yesterday to my family and friends in CA.

When Dad went to Fresno State in 1966, the State Colleges were Free.

When I went to Fresno state is started out 145.00 for a semester, and City College was free.
And by the time I graduated in 1990, Fresno State was 520.00 a semester.

Today all over the state there are strikes. I hope you can either go to a strike and give support, or drive by and honk in support, call your State Congress members, write letter to the editor, etc. Before it is too late.

Democracy Now had a great show yesterday on the CA education system, and another one today on the strikes.

Maybe the news there is covering it, but I bet not as well as Democracy Now

Yesterday's show.

2. Great to see! Citizens actually demanding the use of what they've paid for!
Perhaps this will be a spark to spread beyond universities and beyond Cali as well - they've been a bellwether many times in the past!
