We have a long way to go. Progressive friend said "gov't doesn't do anything right"

I just don't get it. We agree on just about everything political. Then we started talking about health care reform and she said, something about gov't run health care. I said, "I don't want gov't run health care either, I want gov't paid health care". Then she said "well, government doesn't do anything right". I gave her all the reasons government does a lot of things right. She's minutes away from retirement and will get Medicare. I asked her if she would give that up. "No!" And I asked why can't we have that for everyone. "It's too expensive". Then I explained how much Medicare SAVES over private insurance. She just looked at me blankly.

We have a long battle ahead if it takes this kind of discussion on our own side.

Keep fighting the good fight.

1. Too many Republicans elected in the last 20 years.

Their "point" seems to be to get elected, screw everything up as much as humanly possible, then point at the flaming buildings they're standing in front of while screaming "See! Government doesn't work!". It's not hard to build distrust of the government on a massive scale when you're as good at making messes as they are.
