Godless ads now on Portland area buses (gasp!)
http://www.examiner.com/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2009m11d18-Godless-ads-now-on-Portland-area-buses-Video

Godless Ads are now on Portland area buses. The advertisement asks, “Are You Good without God? Millions Are". The ad is set against a blue sky with white clouds, and is now appearing on the side of ten TriMet buses.

The ads are part of a coordinated multi-organizational advertising campaign designed to raise awareness about people who don't believe in a god. The ads were placed by the Greater Portland Coalition of Reason (Portland CoR), with $5,900 in funding from the United Coalition of Reason (United CoR).

The organization also purchased billboards across the country, along with ads on buses in other cities, in an effort to spark discussion about the existence of God. The ad campaign here in Portland is scheduled to continue for at least a month.

Sylvia Benner, with the Portland Coalition of Reason, claims the ad targets both believers and non believers.

"The purpose of this message is to let them know that a lot of their neighbors, friends and professional service providers do not, in fact, believe in a God. And, that is OK," says Benner.

Uh-oh! Godless Americans! In Portland! Major Threat Alert!

4. Can't you just see a Tri-Met bus with a godless sign out in Crackamas?
The Happy Valley/Damascus Baptodomers will go nuts. Not that they would ever actually ride a bus.

Apologies to all for the local jargon.

8. We've got our own weird version of suburb
Mix loggers and hipsters with a touch of outdoor soul, add generous amounts of rain. Drop in a megachurch or ten. There's Clackamas County. Did I mention the pickup trucks and chain saws?

:)

6. Being from the Portland area, I am somewhat aware of the ongoing bus advertising controversy.
A couple of years ago, it was about salmon, from differing political perspectives. They decided that buses were no place for controversial, or political viewpoints.

In this case, I think the viewpoint is maybe controversial, but definitely not political.

11. Hardly a controversial message in Portland
People were not only not religious, for the most part, they were even incredibly ignorant about it. ("No, hot cross buns are not for Passover.")

I'm only interested in crosses that are scorching my buttocks.

13. Funny
It's funny how uncontroversial the messages are on these atheist buses. And they still create controversy.
