The Special Olympics is to winners as FOX News is to experts
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 11:20 PM by Electric Monk
If you show up, you are one

Gotta love The Daily Show :bounce:

edited to add context: They had a clip of some FOX News expert saying the reason Palin was 'such a threat' to liberals is Palin has 5 kids (no liberals would have 5 kids) and one has Downs syndrome, and liberals would just abort. Then Jon mentioned Eunice Kennedy Shriver, from a family of 9 kids, founded the Special Olympics. Then he gave the line I posted above as the punchline.

17. Yeah, this is the last time I try and quote a joke from there here on DU
Next time I'll just say I thought it was funny if I found it funny.

Some people get the humor, some clearly don't.

10. It was on the Daily Show so it must be ok.
:sarcasm:

It is offensive. Had Fox made a statement in the reverse.....well you know what the drill is.

26. You don't even have to reverse it...
...to see the problem. FOX news doesn't have real experts like the special olympics doesn't have realwinners. THAT'S what people are so upset about. Sheesh...

25. I usually like what Stewart says, but I agree. It was offensive.
I work with people who have Developmental Disabilities and many participate in Special O. Stewart was mocking Fox, but he did so by comparing the premise of Special Olympics to Fox's so-called "experts". Participants in Special O all get recognition for their efforts because they overcome physical and cognitive disabilities just to participate in the events. By comparing Fox's attitude of using shills and calling them "experts" to the recognition process at Special O, Stewart was demeaning Special O and its participants.

13. yeah?
Jon has the occasional lapse in language, using words offensive to people with mental disabilities and those who love them. I've seen my niece (who is a mildly mentally retarded adult and incidentally a Special Olympics medal winner in HS) visibly stung hearing Jon use the word "retard" or "retarded" as a pejorative.

19. It can be hard to tell intent in written word
I haven't seen the clip with John saying it so I can't judge it but I can tell he was using Eunice Kennedy as a counterpoint to the so called experts claim and I'm sure he meant it as a knock on Fox and not on the Special Olympics. He is a comedian so some of the things hes says can come off bad sometimes. But we all know John and I'm sure he had the best of intentions with that line even if it came off bad. He does make a very good point about Eunice Kennedy coming from a large liberal family and founding the Special Olympics and about how just showing up on Fox seems to deem people the title of expert.

20. Okay I just saw it
And as a liberal and mother of an autistic son I am more offended by what that so called expert saying how liberals would never chose to have children with special needs than what John Stewart said.
