Just wanted to point out again that Larry Summers advocated exporting Toxic Waste
to the third world because it had economic benefits. I also want to point out again he is the Director of the White House Economic Council.

1. Did you vote for the rethugs despite your protestations to the
contrary? You're on a tear there, Jake, to discredit anything and anyone connected to this admin.

Me, :boring:

Did you hear about the Senate health care bill tonight that was scored by the CBO? Great news, right?

4. Larry Summers has been on my shit list for years.
I was so disappointed when Obama picked him, and Geitner.

And FYI, I voted all Dem.

5. Question
If John McCain was President and his head of economic policy advocated exporting our toxic waste to poorer nations because the agents that cause health problems in the waste was less likely to be noticed in a population that had a lower standard of living and a shorter life span, what would you post on DU?

Nor my next question about what if George W. Bush appointed an economic adviser who believed that Women were bad at math and thus made shitty Scientist.

2. Ha - figures. No moral compass at all I see -

1) The measurements of the costs of health impairing pollution depends on the foregone earnings from increased morbidity and mortality. From this point of view a given amount of health impairing pollution should be done in the country with the lowest cost, which will be the country with the lowest wages. I think the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country is impeccable and we should face up to that.

That portion of the memo says it all right there.

16. He really said that?
I read it but it was hard to believe, that's one of the most heartless, evil things I've ever seen.

Days of work lost to pollution-induced sickness and death * average wage in the region =
cost of said pollution. We can reduce the cost by moving the pollution to where poor people will be the ones missing work and dying. Never mind that he's talking about moving it to an entirely different country which likely had no part in producing that pollution.

This is one of the purest examples of what's wrong with our models of cost and productivity that I've seen.

That's a world view that's entirely unacceptable, and should be enough to send him back to the soul-less planet he came from. We have got to get rid of this guy.

I've watched him speak a couple of times, don't remember the venue, just on TV not in person, but I was blown away at what a total a-hole he is, I saw no redeeming human qualities in the man. Even so, I'm still shaken to read this quote. Holy shit!

How do we accelerate the Progressive Caucus's push to get rid of him?

He put it in writing and distributed it as a memo.

20. The fact that it was in a memo - and others
read it, accepted it and probably thought nothing about it is a prime example of how low those willing to walk over dead bodies for a buck will go - any questions now that Wall Street needs the hell regulated out of it?

21. If you look at pictures of the pollution in China in 2009
Someone read that memo and implemented the idea.

13. Just want to point out to you that appointing Larry Summers
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 12:22 AM by chill_wind
"would be like appointing the arsonist who burned down the city as the new fire commissioner. We like to tell our children that success is rewarded and that failure is punished."

Heh. Dean Baker said that November 7 2008. (Which might explain why he ended up no where near any part of the WH Economic Council Echo Chamber. Or not even on PERAB. Which is very much our loss..)

17. One thing you have to say for Summers is that he's brilliant
and brilliantly gotten it wrong on call after call for over a decade now.

At some point one might ask, when will such brilliance recede?
