Palin's book is being SLAUGHTERED on Amazon

God help America if this ignorant, self-obsessed, money-grabbing, hypocritical half-wit is the best we can do. May she return - and swiftly - from whence she came, and take her self-promoting, babbling book of nonsense with her.

I've lived in Alaska for 55 years. I'm a registered independent. I've attended meetings with Governor Palin. I know the lady, not the image she projects. I've got no axe to grind; Palin is now largely irrelevant to Alaska.

From out of all the misstatements, narcissism, spin and distortions that make this biography so embarrassing to read, one indisputable fact emerges: It's pretty clear ex-governor Palin would still be a low-profile politician in the frozen north, but for candidate McCain and his staff. Those would be the same folks she attacks so fiercely in this biography.

Which brings to mind Mark Twain's famous quote: "If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man."

These "memoir," co-written with Lynn Vincent, is one of the most disturbing books I've ever read. "Going Rogue" appears to be addressing a checklist of grievances that Palin has been nursing just about all her life. Palin's emotional and intellectual development seems to have stalled out somewhere around tenth grade. That works fine for many people, G-d knows--He made so many of them! But a narcissistic, self-absorbed Mean Girl (or Boy) is not what this country needs in its President. When Palin blithely accepted the offer to run as vice president, she was unfazed by the prospect of being a heartbeat away from the White House, with a running mate in his seventies who's survived four bouts of cancer that we know of. As of today, there are at least three versions of the story of how she accepted the offer: what Palin told Oprah Winfrey, what she told Sean Hannity, and what she says in the book. Which is it? Did she ask the kids? Did she discuss it with Todd. Did she "not blink"? Or do we care, so long as it doesn't happen again?

The buck stops somewhere else,

What is it about Sarah Palin that draws such an emotional response from both the left and right? In all my (considerable) years, I've never seen anything like it and I can't at all fully explain it. Part of it is that Palin is - iike another lightning rod from the past, Phyllis Schlafly - a conservative feminist. Part of it is that she is brazenly anti-intellectual. Add in the fact that she is naturally telegenic and you have someone wholly unique in America.

Now Sarah Palin gets to tell her own story without any filter. I don't know what the hub-bub is about this book because it's standard political fodder. A woman rises from humble beginnings and through hard work and a supportive husband makes it to the national stage. The writing style is rather mundane and plain (yes, I know she didn't really write the book), which tends to be true of all political autobiographies. If you're a fan of Sarah Palin, you'll find her tale of ascent inspiring. If you aren't, you'll find it tedious and predictable. If you like a good memoir, this book won't cross over the bar, but then again politicians tend to all write bad memoirs.

priceless......

her heart. This book will long be remembered. If you need to ask how slanted I am, I'll just say one thing - I have diligently ignored her about 95% of the time, but I'm so glad she wrote this - now we will all (minus 20% of the country) know what a strange state of mind she comes from.

Thanks for the run-down and your work assembling it.

Couldn't Finish -- Must Be Contagious, November 18, 2009
By Sarah L. (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews

Here's an excerpt:

"Ahead on my right, I saw the Alaska Right To Life (RTL)booth, where a poster caught my eye, taking my breath away. It featured the sweetest baby girl swathed in pink, pretend angel wings fastened to her soft shoulders."That's you baby", I whispered to Piper..... She popped another cloud of cotton candy into her mouth and looked nonchalant."

See, I was expecting a memoir with a reasonable helping of political policy, perhaps a discussion of the campaign strategy...and instead, I got a romance novel gone bitterly bad. Palin comes off as really angry in this book, and takes a petty swipe at just about everyone she ever met, but never once finds tome to talk about anything important. This book will take you back to junior high again.

Sorry, Ms Palin, but this was ghost-written? By whom? It was written in 4 months and it shows.

Don't waste your money unless you're a die hard Palin fan who just wants the pictures.

The rightwing tries to make Palin out as some victim of leftwing sexism but that is a red herring. She is not ready and never will be for big time politics, like Dan Quayle. Quayle, like Palin, wasn't opposed for his sex but because both are empty suits.

9. This review by Ed of Gin & Tacos is pretty entertaining
If you are in a hurry, here is the succinct version of this review: Going Rogue is shit.

It is groundbreaking in its banality and disregard for facts. If you are sentient, it will pain you to read it. Imagine watching your parents 69 one another while John Madden sits behind you and bellows out color commentary and you will have some idea of how excruciating and profoundly scarring it is to plow through each page of this wholly fictional monument to self-aggrandized mediocrity. Going Rogue is to the art of writing what the Holocaust is to the concept of a just God – the piece of disconfirming evidence so overwhelming that we are left questioning whether it can exist at all.

Going Rogue is not without merit. It certainly delivers what its intended audience wants. Readers who already like Palin will love it, much as America’s pedophiles will find the latest Jonas Brothers DVD to their liking. The authors’ talent for communicating the ex-Governor’s unique rhetorical style in print is remarkable – the Sesame Street cadence of her delivery and the intermittent Tourette’s-like winks leap off the page. The book, recession priced at just $9, is also an ideal gift for the Aunt or Uncle who assaults your email inbox with a dozen weekly communiqués on the President’s Kenyan birth and the constitutionality of income taxes.

Unfortunately that is an exhaustive list of its strengths.

The book is less a biography than an elaborate press release. Its 432 pages (with sixteen pages of pictures – and no index) barely feign interest in describing Palin’s life in detail. It moves as quickly as possible to its real raison d’être – a methodical re-imagining of her entire political career replete with more excuses than a Cleveland Browns post-game press conference. Palin has never done anything wrong. The public have merely been led to believe that she is a dangerously stupid, erratic narcissist. Going Rogue is all about setting that record straight, offering a wildly implausible excuse for every crash and bang in her train wreck of a political career.

American as timber wolf pie, November 17, 2009
By Mike V. - See all my reviews

It's been over two decades, but there was always hope in praying to the great Saint Ronny. Over those two decades, often it is discussed: Will there be another savior for the right?
There will. I'll be the first: Saint Palin.
They laughed at his lacquered and dyed head, they laugh at her mommy hair and strange glasses.
What's not to love about this tough Alaskan with the nice gams and love for the Lord?
From Bill Kristol to Rush, they will sing her praises waving the flag with one hand and with the other...
From the Caribou's mouth to your ears, this is the tale of a real American woman and her climb all the way to vice presidential nominee. To that day when she made that choice to REALLY prove who she was to the world by quitting as the Alaska governor. Just so she could put down her very public life on paper. Via ghostwriter.
God Bless the USA!

Palin will be the force that pushes that dissonance past the breaking point. She will gather her power and in the process break the lockstep of the GOP, while simultaneously serving as a wake up call to anyone with more than ten brain cells to rub together to find common interests across the left/right party lines, because they will come to know something like Palin can never be repeated in US national politics.

Her messianic complex dovetails with the need of a New Movement Messiah, and while as a politician or stateswoman, she has a disaster potential that can only be quantified in exponents of Bush Units (BU^x), however her other ‘qualities’ like a raw, furiously burning ambition, lust for power and wealth, and remarkable first hand knowledge of the coded dialects that engage the seething paranoia and fear that dominates so much of her audiences mind. She will BE their messiah, and she shall break them with her coming. Bill Kristol had no idea what he was dealing with when he pulled her from obscurity, but now that she has tasted national attention and made the rounds through the back rooms, it kindled the same fire in her that burned in Nixon, but Nixon was clever in a way she is not, and Palin is charismatic, which was never a word said in the same sentence as Nixon. The three legged stool of the GOP isn’t standing straight, and the wobbly, more insane leg is fed up with the other two. Palin will part through the mire and muck and sacrifice moderation and reason on the altar of her own rhetoric and ambition, and it will be beautiful and terrifying to behold. In tapping her for attention, Kristol and the neocon’s fed blood to the beast that would eat them all, Palin will burn like a furious firestorm, pulling with her the values voters and leaving the Business and ‘Serious Foreign Policy’ wings of the GOP as ashes in her path. It has already started in NY, and it will happen again and again as the frothing mad run primary candidates against repubs that do not conform to their rigid ideological purity. Palin could very well be the harbinger of the end of the modern incarnation of the GOP; concentrating and purifying the most rapid and ignorant while forcing anyone else who can think to find common ground against this virulent and ever shrinking minority of American political subcultures that requires violent paranoia and external enemies to hold them together. Well as this article points out, Palin found the enemies to focus her followers on, and they are other Republicans.

Ain't afraid of no Vietcong king

November 17, 2009

Review by Gen. JC Christian, patriot (he is a DU member, albeit an infrequent poster)

There are many kinds of truth. There are truths based on facts, truths based on faith, and truths based on something that sounds as if it should be true (truthiness). Then there's the kind of truth we find in Sarah's book: stories and concepts that become truths simply because she states them. She's a lot like our Lord and Savior, Glen Beck, in that respect.

Sometimes, she states truths that would be considered ludicrous if uttered by someone else. Her claim that the McCain campaign forced her to spend $150,000 in RNC funds to dress her family in designer clothes is one example of that. Although it might be easier to believe that she acted like a trailer park Zsa Zsa who'd found a credit card left behind at a possum feed, she blames McCain staffers. That's good enough for us, because we have faith; we want to believe her truths.

But the book isn't perfect. As much as I enjoyed the few short paragraphs in which Mrs Palin laid out her policy objectives, she could have condensed it all into one sentence: "I'm going to grab an Oxo Good Grips Stainless Serving Spatula and go all mavericky on your non-white, non-Christian and non-heterosexual butts."

The book also fails to expose Mrs. Palin's intellectual brilliance and keen grasp of foreign policy issues. Why wasn't the text of her recent speech in Hong Kong included? Although it remains secret, it's rumored that she viciously rebuked the Vietcong king for his assault on the Empire State Building. That's a speech we've been waiting for nearly 75 years to hear. It's big news and should have been included.

As you read other reviews of this book, please remember that Mrs. Palin has many enemies who are eager to pan her work. The Palin family's most potent nemesis, Levi's johnston, is no dpubt fully erect and ready to spew globs of misfortune upon them for a third time. And reason-adoring intellectuals are certain to point out that an interview on Good Morning Topeka doesn't qualify as a policy summit in the Far East.

But a few bad reviews won't stop her. She's seen much worse from her kitchen window. It can't be pleasant to gaze upon Antichristograd every morning as you brew your coffee.

My review isn't complete, but I think I'll quit anyway, because writing reviews, like governing, is just too darned hard to finish.

By Mark T. Bay "uberlib"

As a serious read about politics in America, this book best serves as toilet paper or kindling. As a hysterically funny look at the rantings of a pathological narcissist and why the Lunatic Wing of the far right must never, ever be allowed to hold power or even reproduce, it's the best political satire since Al Franken or Molly Ivens. If Americans are looking for a writer that makes Bush II look intelligent and thoughtful, NRA Barbie definitely fits the bill.

Incidentally, if this book was written for the "Real Americans" who love this whackjob, who is reading it to these "Real Americans" because many of them are obviously illiterate.

Books-a-Million... had a display in the front with maybe 20 copies that might have once held 30 copies, and a few behind the registers.

I left without buying anything myself, so didn't have a chance to ask how many they sold yesterday... I bet it's off the bestseller's list in 3 weeks.

On edit: My local library system has 62 copies showing up online, and 400+ requests for it... the irony is, I'm guessing all those people voted AGAINST the socialist library levy this past election...

Is that really how Americans think?, November 17, 2009
By DanielM "DanielM" (Oslo) - See all my reviews

I bought the book based thinking I would just have a laugh at what she writes about who to blame for the bad (for her) result of the election, but I'm actually horrified after reading it. Is that really how Americans (ok, lets say 40%) think? I'm really sorry to say this but around 50% of what she is writing is either stone-age theory (oh my god, is she serious about the "I don't believe in evolution"-stuff??? really??) or just downright dumb. Somebody here in the reviews commented on how she is so clever when it comes to energy, and I cannot believe anybody would actually believe that. She is writing how the drilling of offshore fields would make everything better, how does that in any way show expertise in the field of energy? It's just downright ignorant.

I have to say that this book really scares me. If 40odd percent of American believe that she is right to be number two in office the world has big problems. The US is still one of the (if not THE) most important countries in the world, and if people are actually agreeing with what she is writing in the book I truly believe we will have a problem.

Jeeez, how incredibly stupid can someone be, I really didn't expect to be that angry after reading it...

53. That's OK
Let her make all the money in the world thoroughly PROVING that she's a bonafide DUNCE.

She'll eventually burn out from the public sphere, even if its after 2012.

Lets sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacle that she is and brings.

After all, laughter is good for the soul.

34. Not to bring down the party but the overall rating is 4/5 stars and its the #1 book on Amazon non
fiction, though it should be fiction.

35. Not a bring down, it's still going to be like a 4th of July Firework
or a Viagra erection, up for a brief period of time and without any further help, flaccid and played out. I am telling you, the corncobs are buying it for the pictures to put on their bathroom walls.

38. Check the "most helpful favorable review" ratings for a more accurate picture
Click 'Most Helpful First' and you see the one star reviews are generally rated higher then the five star ratings. There are far more people voting the book down than up, and as Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing".

39. I'm sure it's terrible, but I wouldn't trust Amazon for a world-view.
Digg.com allegedly is comprehensive as well, but most stories read like they're straight off DU. We progressives ain't exactly underrepresented on the internetz.

By Michael J. Krygeris "-Mikek" (NH) - See all my reviews

Ms. Palin appears to be suffering from some sort of delusions of grandeur mixed with equal parts paranoia. The only unexpectedly absent part is how she read "The Secret" and all her dreams came true for a while. She obviously cannot accept that she alone is to blame for the epic rise and fall of John McCain. This is a true work of fiction based not on creativity, but full on delusion. No doubt there are those that will drink the flavor-aid unquestioningly, then follow her right over the edge of the cliffs(I'll call them Jonestown Lemmings). For the rest of us sentient beings that were around to watch her antics... remember Sarah, we were there too.

Wouldn't it be funny if 100's of people posted videos on youtube of the book being shot-up?

I WILL bring it up to my property and make a high-quality video of me seeing how many shots it takes to "remove" a certain distasteful image from the cover ;)

51. My favorite is the one that compares her to Joan of Arc.
This is an excellent book about a typical, self-reliant, highly independent American rising up in a "Joan of Arc" fashion to help save her country from the hopeless, misleading and misguided.

Holy shite.

It's spot on. She makes Nancy frickin' Reagan seem grounded and compassionate.

58. Amusing but meaningless..
...everyone knows the reviews for political books are stacked by partisans that go in and rate things down or review it badly. It's part of the game both sides play.

I am quite certain the book is tedious and horrible, but that is because I am not a fan of Palin. Books by authors we on DU would like get savaged on Amazon too. It's all pretty silly and driven by partisanship and most everyone knows it.

60. Some folks need a little silly in their lives, sorry you disapprove....
Our books aren't bulk bought. Our books aren't given away for free or sold at 66% discounts. And our books virtually NEVER make number one.

Some folks need silly in their lives. And we do, especially more so than the Freepturds who think we should be stoic and repentant for our partisanship.

61. No no, I don't disapprove...
I am still reading through some of the comments and find them amusing too. Just felt obligated to make the point that because a political book gets savaged on Amazon really doesn't mean much. It's just that a lot of books by authors I happen to like get savaged by the rightwing types and I know they didn't really read the book, only using the forum as an opportunity to slam someone they don't like.

59. The reviews don't matter for political books, everyone knows they're stacked. What matters is -
- this page > http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/books/ref=sv_b_3

I guess the good news is that she's beating Glenn Beck, who's at #8.

Sheesh . . . I just don't get it.
