Afghanistan War to surpass length of Revolutionary War
As President Obama considers sending additional American troops to Afghanistan, some perspective on the conflict is in order.

On Feb. 22, 2010, the war in Afghanistan will surpass the American Revolution in length. As of Nov. 17, 2009, The Revolutionary War is the second longest war in American history. The war in Vietnam is the longest.

What, exactly, is the mission in Afghanistan? If there is a clearly defined mission, would adding more troops help the United States achieve it? What do we gain in terms of national security by staying in Afghanistan? Conversely, is our national security in any way threatened by increasing our presence there? Has an exit strategy been devised? Will the veterans of this war, and the war in Iraq, receive the funding and care they deserve once they return from battle?

There may not be any easy answers, but to not ask the questions is inexcusable. There is too much at stake, on a geopolitical level, for the people of Afghanistan and for U.S. military personnel and their families.

1. Ahh, the Revolutionary War. Now them were the days...
Fighting barefoot in the snow, armies marching right up to each other than then firing their weapons. The enemies wore those easy to identify red uniforms and there were no roadside bombs. If it were only so easy now.

3. Actually if you add US covert action since the late 70s, we're looking at 30 years or more

4. I believe all wars are different, and
trying to compare any two is a useless thing to do. More useful to talk about each war in it's own context imo.

5. There is no 'war'
Afghanistan has no standing army, therefore, we are not at 'war' with Afghanistan. We're running around the planet, drunk and bat-shit crazy with power, firing at whatever the hell we feel like.

That is not war, and there will be no end to it unless we demand one.

6. There most certainly is a war, it's just more convoluted
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 02:19 PM by SIMPLYB1980
than those in the past as will be those in the future. Iraq was a war about being bat-shit crazy with our power. Afghanistan is and was the war we should have been fighting all this time.

11. Just think it's funny how people over simplify their beliefs
so that they could fit into a little box. I don't like being in a box, but if you like it that's up to you.

18. I don't mind it. Some people deserve to die.
Especially those who kill innocent people indiscriminately for religious beliefs.:hi:

From DeSoto at Mobile Bay to the Battle of Sugar Point?

The first battles in what is now the US were between Native Americans and Spanish.

25. It's almost insulting to compare the two. The Revolutionary War was a war for independence
while the war in Afghanistan is an imperialist venture that has little to do with our national interest.

28. We've been in Iraq since '91.

American Legion membership is limited to those who served active duty during a time of war. That membership is open to anyone who has served in the military since the beginning of Desert Storm (possibly even Desert Shield) in '91.
