What a great way of visualizing history.

Although from the comment section, it looks the creator missed Irish independence in 1922 and had Cuban independence a couple decades early.

Would be interesting to see the US included, but since most colonies were not formal, it would be necessary to insert some political interpretation, which would weaken the effect in some ways.
