Donate to DU today, and 10% of your donation goes to help foster children

As you probably know, this week is Democratic Underground's Fourth Quarter 2009 fund drive. This is a completely independent website, and we depend on the generous contributions of our visitors to help cover our costs. We receive no funds from any other organizations. Other than advertising, our main source of income is small donations -- about $20 per donor.

With Thanksgiving next week, we decided to try something new this year to give back to the community. If you donate this week, we will give 10% of your donation to charity. A different charity has been assigned to each day. If you donate before 12 midnight Pacific Time (3am Eastern Time), we'll give 10% to help foster children:

Treehouse for Kids offers kids in foster care what all children so desperately need: a safe place to dream. Their core programs – Tutoring, Educational Advocacy, College and Career Planning, Little Wishes, Summer Camp and the Wearhouse – give foster children a real childhood as well as hope for the future. http://www.treehouse4kids.org

Please take a moment right now to donate. It's quick and easy and totally secure. Just click here:

Thank you so much for your support.

Please kick and recommend this thread so more DUers can see it. Thanks.

2. Answer.
We did not intend to donate 10% from existing subscribers. But if any individual subscriber sends me an email designate a portion of their subscription to charity, we'll do it.

New subscribers who sign up during this fund drive would be included in the charity promotion.

5. If you have some extra money, today's the day
Treehouse is a wonderful organization that assists kids the Republican Party thinks are throwaways -- foster children.

There are a quarter of a million kids in foster care in the USA right now. In the state of Washington, those kids get $150 a year for all clothing, grooming, personal hygiene and school supplies. One hundred and fifty dollars a year. Those who are parents know that you can blow through $150 on just clothing for a growing teenager in one trip. I should also mention that when these kids age out at eighteen, they're on their own. Nobody's going to make sure they have even the barest necessities to live on their own, or they have the education to find a job that pays enough to keep them off the streets.

Here's another stat that should turn the stomach of anyone who believes education is important: Less than three percent of all foster kids graduate from college.

Our aunt places kids in foster care. She doesn't work for Treehouse, but we both agree that what they do is vital. They help these kids understand that someone out there actually cares about them and their future. They fund the stuff other kids take for granted: A yearbook. Soccer. Ballet lessons. Tutoring. They transform an existence into a life.

If we really believe that all kids are important, not just the pre-born, please support Treehouse and organizations like it.

If this isn't sufficient motivation, please give in Sarah Palin's name. Give in Cynthia's (clueless Republican who questioned DU's choice of charities this time around) name. Give in Bart Stupak's name. Just give.

Thank you,
MV/Julie

7. A kick in honor of my daughter
who spent 4+ years in foster care before we became a family. I love her so much and appreciate this chance to help kids who face what she did.

8. Finally managed to kick a few bucks your way...
Had been meaning to for some time, more because I haven't felt it appropriate to post original work without paying something like rent for the opportunity to be heard.
