1. It changed from black and white to color, just like in the Wizard of Oz!
Thanks for posting the link.

4. What I find the MOST fascinating
is that many of these buildings were restored to their former glory.
In this country, they would have been leveled and strip centers put in their places.
Most excellent.
Thank you for this.

8. Agreed. Looking through those I found it interesting to note what features had been either modified
or removed altogether. For example, the tall feature on this church;

Modified;

or this wall;

Now completely gone;

I'm glad you enjoyed the pics.

19. Wal-Mart is always on the edge of town.
You know that!

5. I love that they took the care to restore many of these buildings...
and to retain the "look" of Normandy. I find it so sad that the corporatist mentality in the US, by contrast, finds it so expedient to destroy the historical beauty and rebuild the "ugly expedient."

16. NO... but it has been a trend--starting, I believe with Reaganism
and his overturn of the anti-trust regualtions that prevented monopolies like WalMart from taking over everything with their big box cheap quality throwaway mentality.

7. Thanks.
Very interesting. In the last picture, one can still see the line above which the plaster was repaired on the outside. In other words, they did not completely tear down and rebuild, but fixed what was broken.

instead of just tearing it down.
