Redundancy thread. Right-wingers are really selfish, hateful jerks
My next door office mate. Retired military and very self-absorbed. Thinks an awful lot of himself. Calls himself an "independent" and calls me "a dead head Democrat." I keep telling him he's no independent or a middle of the fence guy - he's a downright wing-nut. His selfishness alone proves that. Anyway...

His wife (a minister) is having to shop for a new car. He told me everything she was looking at (by the way, all of their children are living out of state). All vehicles were SUV's. I mentioned that, and asked about mini-vans. He knows I drive one and have to haul my three kids and their friends around. He told me to "kiss his ass" and that his wife needs an SUV because she's a minister and they are looking for comfort. I mentioned my wife's minister drives a Ford Focus wagon and hauls many things and gets good gas mileage. But he said he doesn't care about gas mileage.

And there you have it, folks. Right-wing assholery in action. Fitting, isn't it?

1. That's a real Christian attitude of his wife
Furthermore, they must go to a pretty LIBERAL church if a woman is allowed to be a preacher. The Catholic Church, most Orthodox churches, and all the fundie Protestant churches will not ordinate women as preachers, ministers, pastors, etc.

2. Let me tell you, she's no liberal
I met her last year, and knowing I'm liberal, told me I should be "grateful" to people like her husband who made it possible for some ivory tower liberal (okay she didn't call me that, but it was implied) like me to speak out against my government (this was when Bush was in office). It was very condescending and so typically right wing of her.

4. She's a conservative pastor in a liberal church, however
Only mainline and liberal Protestant churches will ordinate women today. Fundamentalist Protestants, the Roman Catholic Church, and the vast majority of Eastern Orthodox churches still only ordinate men to be pastors.

8. Fundy churches in my area have had female clerics for a long time
This is about the reddest county in the nation and the churches are very fundy.

11. You know as well as I that this is not a sole significant for conservatism.
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 10:29 AM by YOY
There are quite left leaning Orthodox and Catholic priests. Even Jimmy Carter is an Evangelical...and he's not exactly conservative.

THey are there but they are not the loudest voices.

The hooting jackholes of this world are always the loudest.

6. Not necessarily liberal church. Some fundy churches use female 'lay ministers' a lot
Makes sense when one thinks about it: RW WASP males don't have nuns to do the chores, they gotta find some way to have the wimmens do some of their heavy lifting. ;)

3. I always figured RW assholery was rooted in a genetic inadequacy

Looks like I may have been correct all these years

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/booster_shots/2009/11/do-these-genes-make-my-heart-seem-big-study-finds-a-gene-for-empathy-.html

...
To make a long story short, they did. The researchers put 192 college students at UC Berkeley through a pair of experimental tests -- one that measured their ability to infer the emotional state of others from looking at their facial expressions and another that measured their jumpiness when warned that a loud blast of noise was imminent. The students also were asked to rate their own levels of empathy and ability to handle stressful situations.

The one in four subjects who inherited a variation in this allele called G/G were significantly better at accurately reading the emotions of others by observing their faces than were the remaining three-quarters of subjects, who had inherited either a pair of A's or an A and a G from their parents at this site. Compared to the three-fourths with A/A or A/G variations, the G/G individuals were also less likely to startle when blasted by a loud noise, or to become stressed at the prospect of such a noise. And by their own reports, the G/G subjects were mellower and more attuned to other people than were the A/As or A/Gs.

The group's findings would appear to strike a decisive blow for nature over nurture in shaping who we are and how we behave. In fact, subjects were asked to rate how nurturing their own parents were, and researchers found that a subject's genetic inheritance seemed a better predictor of his empathic disposition than did his mother and father's parenting styles.

But UC graduate student Laura R. Saslow, a co-author of the paper, cautioned that genetic inheritance -- nature -- is never the sole determinant of our personalities. While researchers will get closer to filling in the inborn components of our personalities, the environments in which we've been raised will always interact with our genetic inheritance and shape how it expresses itself, Saslow says.
...

Interesting stuff. Looks like your co-worker didn't get as evolved as you. ;) The science seems to indicate that!

Sadly, it seems RW think tanks have known about this a LONG time, and have nudged nature along by relaxing media ownership laws decades ago, so they can control so much communication and create the environments which will "shape how it expresses itself".

edited for typos

7. Interesting, although I suspect social climate/conditioning, & cultural indoctrination....
... play a greater, more substantive role in shaping the course that one's innate hard-wiring leaves them prone/susceptible to.

5. Anybody tells me to kiss his ass, the conversation is over
and any further contact is work related, only.

I mean, really. All he's doing is bragging and rubbing your face in what he thinks is your political correctness. His whole purpose in life is to make people around him unhappy and it looks like he's succeeding.

10. I know.. like spitting, that type of locker room banter-jabbing is usually favored by major a-holes
When people have to repeatedly assure others that they're "only kidding," they're usually not.

12. They have this stereotype of us.
It infers some kind of ineffectual overemotional state of mind that defies logic. Despite the fact that we've got logic and their 'reality' and 'logic' is non-existant...and they deny that much even when presented to them.

Of course we have our stereotype of them...usually it's pretty dead on.

14. or maybe we're just not as wacky left wing as they think we are.
Maybe just maybe the political compass in the US is out of whack...just like anyone who has ever traveled abroad can tell you.

16. Since most wingers believe the crap their spokes propagandists tell them...
they trip over the reality of what we are in their rush to kick the scardy cats they have been told we are.

Nothing more fun than watching their confusion and distress when one proves their assumptions and delusions are wrong. ;)

15. "his wife needs an SUV"
His wife "NEEDS" food, clothing and shelter. The rest is a want or a desire. I hate it when people say they NEED a big gas guzzling car, or a widescreen TV, or a cruise to Alaska.

17. I may have responded to his claim thusly: Perhaps she needs a gym membership
If her ass is so big, only an SUV will do... oh, I see, her big ass is her husband.

yeah, I have reached that point with these bots. They need to find out liberals are not without a lot of spunk. Eventually, bullies stop targeting those who are not easy marks ;)
