Palin: Can't we just underscore the fact that she has a personality disorder and be done...
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 12:02 AM by Writer
with her? Good LAWD!

Based on pure empirical observation, this woman is a malignant narcissist. Accuse me of armchair psychology, sure, but frankly I don't care. That's exactly what she is. I feel very sorry (believe it or not) for the people in the McCain camp who had to deal with her behavior and that includes (oh yes) Levi Johnston, who she used and tossed out when she didn't need him anymore. Not to mention her children who she sees as objects for her hungry desire for narcissistic supply.

Read this article... for anyone who is familiar with this disorder you can see hints of the narcissism therein:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34002562/ns/politics-more_politics/

If you want to just brush off the fact that she's a narcissist, consider this: Narcissists are highly functioning SOCIOPATHS. If her disease was pure sociopathy, a la Charlie Manson, would you just say "Oh well," and walk away? This woman - whether she likes it or not - belongs in a hospital. Just because she's functional doesn't mean that we should continue fostering what is so obviously a serious personality disorder.

Either we finally call her out on her disorder (he he he) or we should simply turn our collective backs on her. I know she has a following, but goddamnit, Peggy Hill is a walking DISEASE!

((I know I'm dreaming, but wouldn't it be nice if we were to call out one of these narcs for once?))

STOP IGNORING THE PRESENCE OF NPD! GET INFORMED, GET VOCAL, THEN GET AWAY!

1. "The Odd Lies of sarah palin" by Andrew Sullivan
<snip>

"After you have read these, ask yourself: what wouldn't Sarah Palin lie about if she felt she had to?

Palin lied when she said the dismissal of her public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, had nothing to do with his refusal to fire state trooper Mike Wooten; in fact, the Branchflower Report concluded that she repeatedly abused her power when dealing with both men.

Palin lied when she repeatedly claimed to have said, "Thanks, but no thanks" to the Bridge to Nowhere; in fact, she openly campaigned for the federal project when running for governor.

Palin lied when she denied that Wasilla's police chief and librarian had been fired; in fact, both were given letters of termination the previous day.

Palin lied when she wrote in the NYT that a comprehensive review by Alaska wildlife officials showed that polar bears were not endangered; in fact, email correspondence between those scientists showed the opposite.

Palin lied when she claimed in her convention speech that an oil gas pipeline "began" under her guidance; in fact, the pipeline was years from breaking ground, if at all.

Palin lied when she told Charlie Gibson that she does not pass judgment on gay people; in fact, she opposes all rights between gay spouses and belongs to a church that promotes conversion therapy.

Palin lied when she denied having said that humans do not contribute to climate change; in fact, she had previously proclaimed that human activity was not to blame.

Palin lied when she claimed that Alaska produces 20 percent of the country's domestic energy supply; in fact, the actual figures, based on any interpretation of her words, are much, much lower.

Palin lied when she told voters she improvised her convention speech when her teleprompter stopped working properly; in fact, all reports showed that the machine had functioned perfectly and that her speech had closely followed the script.

Palin lied when she recalled asking her daughters to vote on whether she should accept the VP offer; in fact, her story contradicts details given by her husband, the McCain campaign, and even Palin herself. (She later added another version."

It is the same for Palin. Someone needs to intervene on both Todd's, and her children's, behalves.

40. Exactly.
We cannot afford to ignore her.

And we can't ignore the stupid idiot voters that voted for Bush and will be the ones to vote for Palin. We need to distract them with a shiny object.

I am hoping she runs as an independent when she fails to get the Republican nomination. That will effectively split that party forever. Or for a while at least.

12. Borderline:

The main feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a pervasive pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image and emotions. People with borderline personality disorder are also usually very impulsive.

This disorder occurs in most by early adulthood. The unstable pattern of interacting with others has persisted for years and is usually closely related to the person’s self-image and early social interactions. The pattern is present in a variety of settings (e.g., not just at work or home) and often is accompanied by a similar lability (fluctuating back and forth, sometimes in a quick manner) in a person’s emotions and feelings. Relationships and the person’s emotion may often be characterized as being shallow.

A person with this disorder will also often exhibit impulsive behaviors and have a majority of the following symptoms:

* Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment
* A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation

35. All of her relationships are intense and most unstable.
I remember when McCain brougt her on board, he had just drawn a crowd of 200. She appeared with him at his next stop and there were 7,000. Of course, Obama was drawing 100,000 plus crowds at the max and close to that routinely. Stable guy, excellent personality, doesn't show anger versus Miss Thing. She must resent him a great deal. Maybe he should have her for lunch, calm her down;)

18. Borderline Personality Disorder has gotten a bunch of really bad press
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 02:37 AM by EFerrari
since about 1996.

But regardless of the press, there is a difference between someone who is willfully destructive as Palin is and someone who is tilting with their biology. And the latter is nothing like the cartoon. I don't know if that makes sense.

24. I have worked with a lot of BPDs over the years.
(And not all of them were on the hospital staff.) I tend to view BPD as a cluster of pathological traits that these people (mostly women, BTW) have evolved as a means of surviving in a crazy and dysfunctional family. I remember a wise old nurse who once told me, "You can always tell when you have Borderlines on the ward because the staff are all fighting with each other." This is a technique BPDs use to keep the negative attention off themselves by generating turmoil. Many of them also have the habit of self-injury (iften writst and arm cutting, burning themselves with cigarettes, etc.). The reasons for this behavior are disputed but I think a major reason for the self-injury is to cause their bodies to produce endorphins, which are endogenous neurotransmitters that function like opiates. Self-cutting yields a pretty good opiate high.

Now, as for Palin, although I'm always skeptical of anyone playing shrink at a distance, she seems to have a cluster of narcissistic, Borderline, histrionic, and antisocial traits. This constellation of personality disorders constitutes "Cluster B." Cluster B Personality Disorders are evidenced by dramatic, erratic behaviors and include Histrionic, Narcissistic, Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorders.

Bush, on the other hand, has always struck me as more of a pure Narcissistic type.

15. Hi.
If she really had a diagnosed disorder, it really would be different than if she's playing Napoleon and getting lauded for it (from some quarters).

I don't want to be an apologist (ever; believe me) for anyone using a diagnosis or label against a human being.

But Sarah isn't a patient, or an honest person, in this case. She's unrepentant and manipulative, and IMHO the OP is about how she is not what she says she is, and more importantly what she is accepted as in the national conversation.

I trust your judgment, and auto's insight, and don't think they are really in conflict here.

17. You and Mike are my headlights.
lol

But calling someone out for a personality disorder is like calling someone out for being tall. There's not much they can do about it even if they agree with you.

Now, calling Sarah Palin out for being an anti-social, manipulating c word, "the waters of her soul wouldn't get your feet wet" is something else.

(And, hey, bleever! I don't get to see you enough. )

My wife knows the disorder well since her first marriage was to someone with NPD. Every interview she does and the excerpts from the book that we've seen just confirm it. It is not just typical republican hubris she seems to have serious deep seated problems.

Having had an up close and personal relationship with an NPD'er, she's textbook.

They rarely recognize themselves when confronted with their behavior. The VP nom just increased her potential narcissistic supply tenfold.

31. Couldn't her behavior be explained much more simply...
...as the inevitable result when pretty is equated with competence, and laziness is rewarded?

From someone who's never really done anything beyond raise some kids, and who had a whole state given to her, isn't this the sort of narcissism we would expect?
