Unemployed girl just knocked on my door with child in tow.
Not a lot to say here, but I felt it just needed to be shared.

A young girl (early 20's?) with her young daughter in a stroller just knocked on my door selling cupcakes door-to-door because she had been "laid off".

The scene was just heartbreaking. I've lived in this apartment for ten years and never have I seen such a thing.

5. So sad... the future ain't what it used to be...

I drive through the Skid Row area of Los Angeles every day on my way to the glass and steel tower. It's getting very crowded.

I only wish I'd had my camera the day a homeless man fell asleep leaning against the wall of the local Wolfgang Puck's... the juxtaposition was incredible.

Everyone who can spare a few hours needs to volunteer at a soup kitchen, food bank, or some other direct-support organization.

Obama told us it was going to get worse before it got better... I was hoping he was wrong.

7. Taking the crosstown bus through Newark, I saw tons of empty houses
and tons of idle, able-bodied men. That's a stimulus project just begging to happen.

6. I have had similar experiences
In my case, they were guys wanting to do yard work. Wish I could have helped them, but I'm in the same boat. No money for that kind of thing, and lots of time on my hands for yard work.

What outraged you first: this horribly tragic story, or the "girl" designation?

23. I think "horribly tragic" overstates the situation. It's sad certainly,
but I give the young woman full marks for enterprise. Others had already commented on the poignancy. I was shocked, however, to see a young woman, a mother of a child, called a "girl" and on a supposedly progressive forum.. Yes.

24. What a sorry state the American Left is in
Young, broke mothers are going door to door selling cupcakes, and people are outraged by a goddamn designation. (Said designation helping to evoke pity.)

"How dare you! That double-amputee sleeping under the bridge is NOT a cripple. He's disabled!"

26. Well apparently you have no appreciation for the generations
of women demeaned through their early middle age by being called "girls". I remember well those days and feel it's important to see to it that we don't go back. We used to call this "raising consciousnesses" back in the 60's. Seems to me we may have to go through a second round of it if you are representative of your generation.

31. Uh, 'scuze me there, Bella.
I DO remember being called "girl" and the objection had to do with sexism and demeaning by men, usually in power over us. This isn't one of those cases. And there are much gentler ways to "raise consciousness" than beaning someone over the head with a baseball bat fer crissakes. That approach was just as assholish in the 60's as it is now. :eyes:

11. As many years as I've seen this .
No matter when I had a fair paying job or now no job and a fixed income , when I see people living off the streets each time another piece of me dies and it does not come back.

They talk about how we are the wealthy nation of the world yet we see this happen. In the photo posted a few posts down of skid row , one would think that building which appears closed could be used to at least house people.

But no there must be insurance . I doubt that these people care about insurance on a building .

Out of the billions spent on these damn wars even if the money were not spent this would still be the case. Out of all the people who made billions robbing this country who get the tax cuts just one would step up and grow a conscience.

I can dream , that's all many even have left anymore.

27. When I pass supposedly "homeless" people on the street...
I make sure to ask them to prove they're really homeless before I give them a damn dime!

If they can't produce a state-issued ID card with a blank address, they get nothing from me!

:sarcasm:

19. Firewood here
I live in southern Louisiana and have a fireplace but it doesn't get much use. Not really worth going out to buy a cord of wood. But last night this guy came driving through the neighborhood knocking door to door, selling whatever people would buy (one neighbor bought two logs and gave the guy $10 even though they were green and probably won't burn). He said he had been layed off for six months and needed to feed his family. I gave him the last $5 in my wallet. So sad.
