Question to the ladies here on DU---Have you ever bought a Playgirl magazine?
Uhh----I'm fortunate to know a whole bunch of Women throughout my life--- I don't think I've met one who has bought a Playgirl magazine... of course they could be hiding them under their mattress.

ewww---Sorry Levi---but your hairy armpits are gross.

1. No, but someone had one in college and it provided an evening's worth of laughter.

8. A friend bought one as a hoot
and I vaguely remember Burt Reynolds was the one with staples in his tummy.

We all thought it was hilarious.

Beefcake really doesn't sell all that well to women. However, it sells very well to other men.

20. No -- that was Cosmo -- and get this -- my Mom bought it, not realizing
that Cosmopolitan had changed.

It used to be a garden-variety women's magazine like McCall's or Redbook. We laughed our asses off and gave her all kinds of shit.

61. here's a better pic of the cover of the first issue of playgirl he appeared on...
Edited on Tue Nov-17-09 09:04 PM by dysfunctional press

he did at least two more covers...

and i think that the centerfold picture was either the same in both, or at least from the same photo shoot...my mother had the cosmo issue, and i remember this being the cosmo centerfold pic:

but i've seen the same pic attributed to having appeared in playgirl.
the playgirl issue in question is from 1974, while the cosmo centerfold was in 1972.

64. I vividly remember a comment from the time
A certain radio personality in Canada had seen the Burt Reynolds pictures in Playgirl.

And remarked, "I've seen bigger "wine corks" in the men's locker room of my golf club"

I prefer articles and such if i am going for a fluff magazine...not pics of penises! ( they really are not that 'pretty' to look at, IMHO...of course i feel differently when it is attached to someone I care about, lol)

24. Vanity Fair is a great magazine I think.
Cause it manages to balance both important political issues, fashion and entertainment.

I used to buy Cosmo but it turned like playgirl without the penises. Maybe I am just too old.

High school was the age for me too. And I had pretty much exactly the same response. Flaccid is not sexy. I want to see guys who look they're obviously having FUN posing.

(I do, on rare occasion, buy gay male mags when I'm really struck by the guy on the cover. Shopkeepers give me strange looks, I don't give a damn. I read 'em for the articles, I promise!)

I think there's a great deal of long standing gender propaganda that's about as accurate and factual as the dominant political mythology re America's so called representative democracy.

22. Once when I was 18. My boyfriend bought a Playboy and I thought turnabout was fair play.
Unfortunately, the editors of PlayGirl did not agree. It was probably the least sexy magazine I have ever read outside of the Better Homes and Gardens I perused at the dentist. I mean, Playboy features these outrageously proportioned females that create this standard women will never be able to live up to. Playgirl featured...regular sized guys. To put it generously.

The expressions on those guys' faces were just hilarious. They were cute guys, but the whole thing was just ridiculous. Never bought another one.

A lot of women like to look at beefcake, if the covers of romance novels and the web sites of some romance authors are anything to go by.

29. a long time ago, when i was 15 or 16 some of us Girl Scouts
got together and went and bought one, and laughed over it, etc.

a couple years later i briefly subscribed.

the pictures at the time weren't bad, they at least weren't as ridiculous as many of the poses women assume in men's magazines. i think the editors thought erections would scare us or something, 'cuz i seem to remember a lack of those.

haven't looked at one in a long time....

30. I bought a few in the 80's
There wasn't much to the magazine aside from the rather lame pics. I was hoping for a ladies alternative to Playboy, with articles, humor and music-centric content. Ironically, the some of best, most subversive articles of that time were printed in the pages of Hustler. I got better, sexier beefcake from the International Male catalog.

Google up "slash fanfiction." I dare you. :) About 95% of it is written by women.

It may follow the traditional pattern of women being more aroused by text than by images--until you see the fanart.

Flipped through one a friend had when I was a teen. The overall impression I was left with was that the guys were all terrifically bored. One guy in particular was posed sitting on a stool -- looked like he was waiting for someone to just shoot him & put him outta his misery.
It was almost like the underlying theme was -- nothing to see here, move along. Took the hint since I was never one for window shopping; I went out an got a live model.

50. Hell no
I'd rather watch a Vin Diesel movie or something. There's something about muscles in action that do for me what stills never will.

And anyway, Levi-boy, is NO Vin Diesel. In fact, I think I'll go watch 'Pitch Black' again, it's my day off.

I can't think of a single "women's" magazine that doesn't piss me off. I don't buy any of them. I don't worry about my weight, I don't care about make up much, but I do know how to put it on, and I wear what pleases me. Oh, and making my man happy, in any sense of the word? We make each other happy. Very.

So, really, there's no point in buying bullshit that repeats itself over and over.
