Forbes: most exotic place for tourism is in Ukraine - not a joke

http://unian.net/eng/news/news-347268.html

Chernobyl NPP is named as the most “exotic” place for tourism on earth. Segodnya newspaper reports that Forbes magazine, which publicized the list of the most eccentric tourist place, where it is possible to have a rest and to see unique things, gave this definition to once dangerous area.

“After 23 years from the nuclear catastrophe at CNPP some companies propose travel tours to this place -, Forbes reports. – Visitors go there in order to see blasted reactor, “dead city”, Pripyat town and orange forest, where pines have orange color because of radiation”.
-----------------------------

"once dangerous area" this is madness! it still is dangerous!

vacation at Chernobyl, come home with a future cancer.

has Forbes magazine lost its mind?

1. No, it's not that dangerous, especially if you just go to look
You can measure these things, you know.

7. You're exposed to radiation all the time...
you know, you can easily tell with the use of a geiger counter what your exposure is, and work out safe distances and times from that. Would I spend much time there? Certainly not. But your post is just 'OMG teh radiation fear', and isn't based on any kind of objective standard. Maybe you should find out how hot it actually is before running around screaming.

10. So put a number on it instead of freaking out. Nothing silly about measurements.
I'm inclined to guess that being within a 5 mile distance of the reactor for an hour or two isn't appreciably dangerous. It's not like they're encouraging people to climb all over the thing.

2. It's possible to visit safely
you just need to limit your exposure. Radiation =! immediately death by cancer.

4. I Was in Kiev in May
It was a lot like Eastern Europe. Some nice Russian Orthodox churches. There were definitely tours to Chernobyl if you were interested.

I actually thought a more exotic tourist activity was the opportunity to drive a Soviet-era tank.

6. They have been hit by a flu epidemic right now
The largest proportion killed or infected in Europe per State.

So I guess the tourist bureau is working full time.

11. Only 20,000 years to go until Reactor 4 is safe.
I wouldn't consider visiting it until they get something a little more stable than the concrete sarcophagus around that thing.

12. I've read that it has become a wild life wonderland -- that may explain it

Because people have been excluded, the wildlife has exploded into something like 19th century levels, and that's one reason people like to go there now.
