Chicago schools president's death ruled suicide
Chicago schools president's death ruled suicide

By CARLA K. JOHNSON (AP) – 2 hours ago

CHICAGO — Chicago police said an investigation into the death of the city's school board president would continue even as an autopsy concluded the longtime civic leader shot himself in the head on a Chicago River embankment.

Chicago Board of Education President Michael Scott's body and a .380-caliber handgun were found near a riverside loading dock not far from his car about 3:15 a.m. Monday, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a suicide, but police said an investigation was ongoing.

"It is simply too early for us to draw any conclusions," Police Superintendent Jody Weis told reporters Monday afternoon.

.....

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools before joining President Barack Obama's Cabinet, said Chicago "has lost a great leader."
..

Scott revealed in August that he'd been subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury in the admissions case. Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman launched the investigation in July after his office learned policies may have been violated. Scott said at the time that he had confidence in the selection process and others should, too.

1. Handguns are illegal in Chicago
How did he get the gun? Why weren't the Police there to stop him.

Ahem! So much for for the law and the Police protecting the unarmed people.

2. It's easier to get a handgun
in Chicago than you might think. You can buy it on the street. Also, there are a lot of dealers in collar communities that are more than happy to let customers skirt the law by registering the gun to an address outside of Chicago.

Even if the gun is legally purchased, Illinois has a 72-hour waiting period for a handgun.

It is worth noting that nothing has been state about who the gun was registered to.

If you're interested in reading more about the case, Trib columnist John Kass wrote a great piece describing the location where the body was found. He seems to doubt the suicide ruling.
