Gray Wolf Federal Protection Removal as Early as May 9th
http://www.nrdconline.org/campaign/actionfund_wolf_0407 The bush administration has a plan to allow states, which have already vowed the extermination of the gray wolf if they are given the right to decide, to have control over an already (in my opinion endangered) threatened animal that only exists in so many states. Such a decision could allow a re-enactment of alaska, which is not only bad for those who love animal rights, but for those who do not want to have lunatics in airplanes gunning at defenseless animals in their neck of the woods. Being the bush administration has already pushed to allow 'vehicle' and 'aircraft' to use 'animal control' in wilderness areas (such as local forests ) I think this is a concern all of us face, whether or not you care about the wolves.

For those who believe killing them is the only way, please do research on the wolf's effect of the ecosystem as a needed predator, and how studies show human hunters are often a greater reason for decline in a game species such as elk, moose or deer in an area. Also, here is a link to a national geographic special about a man who has dedicated his life to understanding wolves, and has learned to identify the code in their howling. http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/manamongwolves/index.html In this documentary, he had an instance where a 'defensive' howl was recorded and sent to a polish farmer/rancher who had his livestock killed by wolves -- the wolves did not come around when the rancher played the defensive howl recording. There are non lethal ways to deter wolves, who are especially at risk because of their threatened/endangered status, and I believe it is the right of those with conscience (and those who are currently upset at gun nuts for ruining this country with ill excuses to do whatever they want, such as setting bad examples of shooting animals from planes) to stand up and protest this. They need 200,000 signatures of protest and have 50 thousand now, by may 9th. Please help spread the word, and thank you.

2. Groups Sue Fish And Wildlife Service Over Wolf Delisting
Three advocacy groups take the feds to court to re-impose Endangered Species Act protection.

By Bob Von Sternberg, Star Tribune

April 17, 2007

Three animal advocacy organizations filed suit on Monday to restore the gray wolf to the federal endangered species list in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., demands that the federal Fish and Wildlife Service be prevented from implementing its so-called delisting plan because the wolf essentially remains endangered in the three states.

The filing by the Humane Society of the United States, Help Our Wolves Live and the Animal Protection Institute comes more than a month after federal officials handed management of the wolf population to state natural resources agencies.

Here is documentary about a wolf researcher I plan on seeing tomorrow. I love wolves and this fucking government wants to kill them again. :(

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/manamongwolves/biography.html

Shaun Ellis is a wolf behavior expert who conducts research in a unique and sometimes controversial way: by living with the wolves and becoming part of their world. Throughout his life, he has dedicated much of his time to studying and researching the behavior of wild wolves by living among them, which has given him one-of-a-kind insight into the complex society of the wolf. By being closer to wolves than nearly anyone else in the world, he has learned a language unlike any other.

Believing that living alongside wolves is the best way to understand them, Ellis immerses himself in wolf society. He lives and behaves like them—howling, licking and snarling—even eating and playing like the wolves. He has lived among captive wolf packs in England and spent seven years on the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho studying wolves. It was on the Nez Perce reservation that he first was able to get inside a pack of wolves and live among them.

His studies evolved as he began recording wild wolf howls in the woods, using recording equipment at night in freezing temperatures and snow, and then playing them back again and again the next day. With patient listening, he learned how to pick out individual pack members through their distinctive sounds.

He recently spent 18 months living in captivity with a trio of wolf pups that had been abandoned by their mother at birth, educating them as wild wolves in the hope that they could survive in the wild.

Through this direct study, he has learned how to communicate with the wolves and defend himself through scent and sounds. He understands scent markings as well as the different howls to defend and call. He believes that wolves are highly intelligent, highly instinctive animals brought up with trust and balance, characteristics that are often misunderstood by humans.
