Judy Biggert (R-Stupid) talks of "The Boston Manicure."
Edited on Mon Nov-16-09 07:51 PM by Atman
Tweety was kicking ass, asking why Biggert (Illinois dist 13) was so afraid of putting KSM on trial in NYC, and whether or not John Adams should have defended the perpetrators of the Boston Massacre, thereby helping to set the basis for our entire system of justice. Uh, deer -- say hello to headlights.

This woman is obviously one of those who wowed her local crowd to win election to Congress, but once she got there demonstrated herself woefully in-over-her-head. Her idea of "getting back to the basics" of law (her words) means having military tribunals at Guantanamo. Astonishing. Just astonishing that people of this level of intellect, Democrat or Republic, get elected to our government.

5. It wasn't so much an analogy as pointing to the roots of our legal system.
Edited on Mon Nov-16-09 07:54 PM by Atman
It could be analogous, but the fundamental point was that the perpetrators had the right to legal representation under our system of laws. In Adams' case, it was about affirming and confirming this system for which so much blood had been spent, thereby ultimately strengthening it. This was essential for the vision of our Democracy to work -- the rule of law.

The people who want to just kill 'em now, or let them rot in jail -- let's skip the whole part about who 'them' is -- have a blood lust for revenge, not necessarily justice, and certainly not law. They regard rule of law and our Constitution as concepts and pieces of paper, nothing more, because satisfying the lust for revenge is more important to them than upholding those very laws upon which our democracy was founded.

10. analogy - comparison, the point is, that we were
English colonies then. The case was tried in Admiralty court, because King George had decreed that civil judges could not try them. This was, in essence, a military commission. Yes, Adams got them off, but if the good people of Boston had had there way, they would have swung from a Liberty Tree.

We didn't have a "version of Democracy" at that point other than mob rule. As a matter of fact, Adams abhored this "version of "Democracy"

So, no it was not a good analogy, comparison or precedent .
