The American Family Assn's color-coded "Naughty or Nice" list: Companies that love or hate Xmas

 The AFA is the best unintentional comedy outlet around.

Naughty or Nice?

AFA's 2009 listing of top retailers and how they recognize Christmas

Based on current advertising, below is a list of companies that avoid, ban, or use the term "Christmas" in their advertising. We will continually update the list, so check back often.

Criteria - AFA reviewed up to four areas to determine if a company was "Christmas-friendly" in their advertising: print media (newspaper inserts), broadcast media (radio/television), website and/or personal visits to the store. If a company's ad has references to items associated with Christmas (trees, wreaths, lights, etc.), it was considered as an attempt to reach "Christmas" shoppers.

If a company has items associated with Christmas, but did not use the word "Christmas," then the company is considered as censoring "Christmas."

Color Code:

Company uses the term "Christmas" on a regular basis, we consider that company Christmas-friendly.

Company refers to Christmas infrequently, or in a single advertising medium, but not in others.

Company may use "Christmas" sparingly in a single or unique product description, but as a company, does not recognize it.

A company may be removed from the "bad" list by providing documentation to AFA.

SPECIAL ALERT! AFA is calling for a "Christmas" boycott of Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic stores.

Why would a company like Advance Auto Parts have any reason whatsoever to mention Christmas?

35. Because people Christmas-shop at Advance Auto Parts
Believe it or not, and I recommend believing it.

Not only do they carry a wide selection of things any car guy would like to have, they'll buy items like power tools that are only offered during the Christmas shopping season.

14. I was going to say...
how the hell did Books-A-Million make the naughty list?

Seems to me their stores are just giant xtian bookstores masquerading as mainstream.

There is a couple of them not far from me here and I remember going in one just after Dawkins "The God Delusion" came out. A huge hit that was on the NYT best sellers list and they had a tiny display of them, no where near the front of the store.

I could be reading too much into that (pun intended).

The computer said they had a copy in the store, but the moran couldn't find it. I left empty handed. Had no problem at Waldenbooks.

9. I would think any company that pushes Christmas as a money making event
would be considered unfriendly.

Not to mention those companies that use Pagan symbols in their advertising like "trees, wreaths, lights, etc."

36. Chick-fil-A definitely should be on there
This list is all retailers, though, and while Interstate Batteries is definitely run by a fundie, it's primarily a supplier rather than a retail seller.

19. Don't these idiots at AFA have any market analysts?
I worked as one a billion years ago, and I can tell them, then: Christmas/whatever you want to call it, is all about SPENDING MONEY. That means retail stores, whether they like it or not, are going to be spreading whatever it is they spread to shoppers and consumers all over. Even if they are Jewish, they're going to pander to the mighty wallets throughout, with the intended goal of separating men and women from some of their money.

Restaurants are different--they are usually not allowed to have a saturation of decorations for a holiday, so they go for low-key instead.

Don't these dick-wads know anything?

23. gap got its own page
http://action.afa.net/takeaction/gap/

Why Boycott?

Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, the three stores owned by San Francisco-based Gap Inc., are being targeted by AFA in a limited two-month boycott over the company's failure to use the word "Christmas" in its advertising to Christmas shoppers.

Gap refuses to use the word Christmas in its television commercials, newspaper ads and in-store promotions despite tens of thousands of consumer requests to recognize Christmas as well as repeated requests from AFA to do the same.

Just one week before Christmas last year, Gap reiterated this politically correct statement to Christmas shoppers. "Gap recognizes that many traditions are celebrated throughout this season and we feel it is important to display holiday signage that is inclusive to everyone."

Did someone forget to tell the Kentucky branch?

http://www.afaky.com/Show.aspx?id=35&m=16

If you shop at Krogers Grocery stores, you can help out the American Family Association, by purchasing one of our Kroger Gift Cards for only $5.00. The card is worth $5.00 in groceries. So there is no cost to you. Each time you shop at Krogers, recharge the card before your purchase, and Krogers will donate to AFA of KY, 4% of the amount.
Click on the Kroger Logo above for more information.

34. I sort of thought Jesus' rage in the Temple market
was to make the point that religion and commerce shouldn't be mixed. But I guess it's ok to bring religion to the marketplace, just not the market to religion. I'm sure the people who are all up in arms about this never have church rummage or bake sales, or have for-pay coffee bars in their lobbies. :eyes:
