"You have GOT to be kidding me . . ." (A conservative view of the DU fund drive)
Edited on Tue Nov-17-09 06:45 AM by Skinner
I just recevied this email about 45 minutes ago. Had to share...

From: Cynthia <Last name and email removed by DU admin>
To: skinner@democraticunderground.com
Date: Nov 16, 2009 2:48 PM

Subject: You have GOT to be kidding me . . .

These aren't 'charities' by any definition of the word (well, maybe the one helping the dogs is). Clearly absent are any of the very fine, effective religious-based charities (TRUE charities) such as Salvation Army and American Red Cross, American Cancer Society. Your selection of what constitutes a 'charity' is evil and perverse and makes a mockery of what charitable giving is all about. God, you miserable, baby-killing, misguided and unhappy people just make me sick.

C'mon you miserable, baby-killing, misguided and unhappy people: You have until 12 midnight Pacific Time (3am Eastern) Tuesday to donate to DU and have 10% of your donation go to Modest Needs. More 'charities' throughout the week...

139. Time for the Noel Coward story again...
One night, some of his friends roped Noel Coward into seeing a play. The play featured a bratty child actress whom Coward absolutely despised, and also used the gimmick of a live horse on stage.

Sure enough, the child actress led the horse onstage and it massively defecated.

Coward observed: "The producer could have solved all his problems, if he had only shoved the child's head up the horse's arse."

167. Oh that is so true. And heartbreaking. I saw a special on kids who grow
up with no parents whatsoever. They go from foster home to foster home. It was horrifying. (Someone corrected me and said that Florida now allows gays to adopt thank God because they often take older children, God bless them).

I remember talking to a guy who grew up in a foster home and he said he waited for years for his mother to come pick him up. Of course she never did.

he would give to the Salvation Army but not the Red Cross. He said he was in Germany and came upon a Red Cross tent serving coffee and donuts. He got a coffee and donut and was charged 10 cents. Not a lot of money but the Salvation Army charged nothing. I know a man who is involved with the Red Cross I will ask him about billing for services provided.

Life's too short.

If we had single payer health care, we could give a lot of poor women birth control pills, which would cut down on abortions, welfare recipients, over-crowded schools, abused (unwanted) children... the list goes on, but I'm preaching to the choir here...

When all those "REAL" charities start taking care of these women before they even consider unprotected sex or an abortion, I'll have more... no, some... respect for them.

I wasn't planning on donating since money is real tight right now (unemployed and had a baby). Actually, some other very nice DUer donated for me the last time around. However, I'll just skip a couple of "luxury" items (e.g., soda, sweets) this week and donate to DU instead.

I hope you are reading DU and see how many DUer you've inspired to donate. Especially Planned Parenthood will thank you! You are such an inspiration!

On edit: I just donated for another member who didn't have a star yet. Thanks again, Cynthia. Not only will money go to Planned Parenthood, but also benefit another DUer.

53. A reply back (feel free to forward)
Dear Cynthia -

Your concern over DU's choice of charities to support would be better received if 1) you were actually more versed in the subject (American Red Cross and American Cancer Society are by no means "religious-based"), and more importantly, 2) if the folks on your side of the fence came anywhere close to the same level of charitable support found here. In the past two years, I've personally put up $12,000 in challenges in support of Feeding America, and every penny of those challenges has been met by the liberals, heathens and atheists of the DU community. I can't say I can recall seeing a similar charitable efforts at FreeRepublic or Red State or Town Hall.

I LOVE the fact that "Cynthia" fails to recognize that Treehouse benefits kids considered by the Republican Party to be "throwaways" -- foster children -- and helps them actually have a childhood instead of an existence.

Why are we surprised, though? Republicans consider every child outside of the womb should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

THAT IS NEWS TO ME.

As a Red Cross Medic I know where that red cross comes from.

If she is lurking....

Here

Now look at this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Switzerland.svg

Just in case the person is dense... the Red Cross symbol is the inverse of the Swiss flag, since the headquarters are in Berne Switzerland.

And just for bonus points and blow heads, here are the other recognized insignia

There was a third one, a red lion, about oh three decades ago, but I guess the Red Crescent will be enough to explode some heads...

119. Now here is one for you
some decades ago I wanted to work with the ARC... the local instructors did not know this.

I was like... WHAT?

I mean Jean Henry Dunnant was nowhere mentioned... and the ARC was special...

What can I say, I think Katrina was a good thing only insofar as the ARC realized that yes, sometimes you do need help from the rest of the movement;

I also was the instructor on Red Cross movement history... ah the Battle of Solferino.... and 1857...

126. I learned about the IRC while reading a memoir of a rescuer of Holocaust victims
Because my Zaidy was a Holocaust survivor. His record is right here:

From: Selo Slatina (Czechoslovakia)

Ghetto(s) Satu Mare (Romania : Ghetto)
Camp(s) Auschwitz I (Poland : Concentration Camp), Neudachs (Poland : Concentration Camp), Auschwitz II-Birkenau (Poland : Death Camp)

Source: tc.usc.edu

I really got interested in reading Holocaust memoirs and stories. One of my all-time favorite is Maus by Art Spiegelman.

I came across the name many times...

99. I worked for Planned Parenthood for 13 years
They are a wonderful, ethical organization. We saw young girls as young as 10 years old who were sexually active. We saw sexual abuse and fear. We worked within tight budgets, fighting for women and their right to choose. Every child deserves to be wanted and cared for. Planned Parenthood exemplifies everything having to do with women's rights, and the rights of children to be loved.

My affiliate gave up federal funds specifically because we wouldn't bow to the right wingers. It was important to us to serve people first.

Please give if you can.

106. Hmm, just made sure I donated to the "baby killers"
How about when I opened DU tonight and saw that today's charity was Planned Parenthood I went immediately to PayPal???

And a few thoughts for the dim-witted Cynthia ....
--Okay, Planned Parenthood does provide access to abortions, BUT that is just ONE thing it does. It provides reproductive health care to women who need it. Why is THAT a problem for a good Christian woman like Cynthia? Does her Jesus say "blessed be those who deny health care to women and children???"
--Planned Parenthood works hard to educate young people about birth control so that they know enough to prevent unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Oh, right, Jesus was all about celibacy. Oh, wait, maybe he never talked about that. He tended to talk about greed and caring for the marginalized (and that is kinda connected to the group receiving donations over the weekend)
--And I never realized that the American Cancer Society was a Christian charity. Red Cross would be rather surprised, too.

Sorry, Skinner. I tend to be one of DU's quieter members. I read alot, post not so often, and rant rarely. Cynthia pushed my buttons.

Skinner,

Please e-mail that particular nutbag to express my - and, I suspect, our collective - appreciation for her sentiments. I was thinking I'd give this fund drive a miss, but that e-mail was what I needed to find the money and send it along.

Of course, with today's report that fully 16% of the American population goes to bed hungry, there are certainly a host of charities that deserve our consideration. Planned Parenthood is a fine choice, and, to paraphrase another nutty republican recently, it drives the RW insane.

Thanks.

donated to Planned Parenthood I guess I have become even more of a "miserable, baby-killing, misguided and unhappy person" than I already was. Oh well. It made me feel tons better to donate and I picked the charity I wanted.

For people sickened by our choice of charities I recommend some Pepto Bismol, bed rest and avoiding things that it bothers them to read. If they do read something that upsets them, they should immediately stop reading it and find something else to read. They should also sit down and be quiet.
Best therapy for their malaise about our "perverse" charities which serve so many so well.

If it makes a teabagger sick, then it must be a good thing.

Seriously...read her post listen as the voice of Veruca Salt screams out from the intertubes.

Read her words more closely...you'll see Veruca between the lines...

These aren't 'charities' by any definition of the word. (well, maybe the one helping the dogs is). All I've got at home is ONE pony and TWO dogs and FOUR cats and SIX bunny rabbits and TWO parakeets and THREE canaries and a green parrot and a turtle, and a SILLY OLD hamster! I WANT a SQUIRREL!!! Clearly absent are any of the very fine, effective religious-based charities (TRUE charities) such as Salvation Army and American Red Cross, American Cancer Society. But I don't want any old squirrel! I want a *TRAINED* squirrel! Your selection of what constitutes a 'charity' is evil and perverse and makes a mockery of what charitable giving is all about. Snozzberries? Who ever heard of a snozzberry? God, you miserable, baby-killing, misguided and unhappy people just make me sick and I want an Ooompa Loompa NOWWWW!

163. I just donated.
So that means I helped to enrich a baby-killing organization?

Good.

Imagine what Jonathan Swift's essay, "A Modest Proposal (For Preventing The Children of Poor People in Ireland From Being A Burden to Their Parents or Country, and For Making Them Beneficial to The Public, by Jonathan Swift, 1729)" would do were your penpal to read this famous (or infamous) bit of satire:

”I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled ...”

<snip>

"For first, as I have already observed, it would greatly lessen the number of papists, with whom we are yearly overrun, being the principal breeders of the nation as well as our most dangerous enemies; and who stay at home on purpose with a design to deliver the kingdom to the Pretender, hoping to take their advantage by the absence of so many good protestants, who have chosen rather to leave their country than stay at home and pay tithes against their conscience to an episcopal curate.

"Secondly, The poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own, which by law may be made liable to distress and help to pay their landlord's rent, their corn and cattle being already seized, and money a thing unknown.

"Thirdly, Whereas the maintenance of an hundred thousand children, from two years old and upward, cannot be computed at less than ten shillings a-piece per annum, the nation's stock will be thereby increased fifty thousand pounds per annum, beside the profit of a new dish introduced to the tables of all gentlemen of fortune in the kingdom who have any refinement in taste. And the money will circulate among ourselves, the goods being entirely of our own growth and manufacture.

"Fourthly, The constant breeders, beside the gain of eight shillings sterling per annum by the sale of their children, will be rid of the charge of maintaining them after the first year.

"Fifthly, This food would likewise bring great custom to taverns; where the vintners will certainly be so prudent as to procure the best receipts for dressing it to perfection, and consequently have their houses frequented by all the fine gentlemen, who justly value themselves upon their knowledge in good eating: and a skilful cook, who understands how to oblige his guests, will contrive to make it as expensive as they please.

"Sixthly, This would be a great inducement to marriage, which all wise nations have either encouraged by rewards or enforced by laws and penalties. It would increase the care and tenderness of mothers toward their children, when they were sure of a settlement for life to the poor babes, provided in some sort by the public, to their annual profit instead of expense. We should see an honest emulation among the married women, which of them could bring the fattest child to the market. Men would become as fond of their wives during the time of their pregnancy as they are now of their mares in foal, their cows in calf, their sows when they are ready to farrow; nor offer to beat or kick them (as is too frequent a practice) for fear of a miscarriage."

See? Swift even had ideas on how to prevent women (and farm animals) from being beaten by their so-called "masters."

Part of being a Christian, at least what I hear from my Pastor when I go to church, is giving back to people and helping others, regardless of what religion, race, age, sex, etc. Really sickening and not very Christian-like, or really what most major religions claim to be.

Salvation Army is and, frankly, that's why I don't give to them.

200. In case the holier-than-thou sender checks this thread,
I'd like to tell her about the Salvation Army in a nearby town. I wondered why I could never find anything good there until someone told me the manager picks the good donations out and takes them home. Reportedly, he can barely close his garage doors. I'll stick with Remote Area Medical, thank you very much.

203. Damn. All those hundreds of hours volunteering for the Red Cross, and I didn't even know.
It's a religious charity.

212. God, you miserable, baby-killing, misguided and unhappy people just make me sick.
Boy! She sounds happy!

If only I were as happy as she sounds instead of being so "miserable" and "unhappy".

BTW...there is only one religious organization that has more $$$$$ than the Salvation Army. That is the Catholic Church. I remember one Thanksgiving, my rich fundie relatives were patting themselves on the back about the 20 thou they gave the SA. A (very good looking...grrrrr) SA officer came to the family dinner (!!!!!!) to congratulate them and inform them that with that money thay had distributed 20 thousand Bibles to poor children! My buddy Michael said under his breath to me "Why not 20 thousand toothbrushes...something useful?"

My other fave thing about that circus of a dinner was when the matriarch of that side of the family stood up and cheered "Let's do more! Who's with me for another 20 thousand?!" my father and uncle backed out of the room without a word. No one rose to the challenge.

Like my brother-in-law said "Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse....."

I never give a dime to religious oriented charities. They get enough. Only secular operations get my donations.

213. Remote area medical isn't charitable?
I think those doctors would take an exception to that.

It's sick that this deluded nutjob believes that "charity" is defined by RELIGION. Now THAT'S misguided!

reply to her at the end of the fund drive with a Link to this thread along with a total tally of how much her email raised? I want her to know EXACTLY how much "baby killing" money she is directly responsible for!

225. A great idea for christmas....
You can give a donation in someone's name to a charity that you know they would despise...and they will send the person a card to that effect.

The person I have in mind is a retired trauma surgeon who lives in Idaho, plugs large mammals, who is against universal health care.....I think some free clinic really needs my money.......
