Generation X Grows Antsy in Job Market

(Remember the days when it was bad to job-hop? These days it's good to do so, otherwise you look lazy. :puke: )

1. There was an earlier thread
with the same article. I'm 41 and I was actually pretty happy at my job until the economy tanked. Once everyone's budget was slashed to notothing environmental projects became a luxury, not a necessity. After having most of my staff laid off and taking two separate 10% pay cuts, I'm not as thrilled to be doing the same for less. The problem is, I'm one of the lucky ones to still be working. Most other firms have laid off all but the partners and some admins. There's nowhere else to hop to.

2. Sounds about right.
I entered this job market in the Bush I recession. Paid my dues.

Got the rug pulled out in the dot-com bust. Paid my dues.

Latest employer closed down last August. 300 resumes out. 2 interviews. 0 offers. Pay cut likely.

Not going back to grad school for a third time.

3. We're hopping as fast as we can...
I don't want to hop but I know the drill as a contract engineer.

I am currently looking again - this will be my fourth? bout of unemployment since March of 2008.

Hopping isn't as fun as it seems.

:P

5. It's just more propaganda to tell you
that it's your fault if you don't have a job, or make enough money. They want to add a little inter-generational fighting, so you have a scapegoat for your problems. I hope this doesn't work. Someone needs to put a stop to the paper collectors.

6. Departments are so beyond lean they're positively skeletal.

Plus, unless they're shown the door, boomers are clinging to their jobs. So it's true. Promotions are non-existent. The only way to move up, or even get new job training, is to find a new job if you can. I don't think anyone beyond the gypsies among us particularly love this routine. Then you have certain industries within small communities where the job-hopping is positively incestuous. My SO is currently working with four people he knew at other places of employment. Everyone gets hired back and forth between competitors through word of mouth.

7. How about that little sum up at the end...
"Spoken like a jaded Gen Xer."

Whoever wrote that article needs to grow the fuck up.
