DU This Poll: Moving Detainees from Gitmo to Illinois?
Edited on Sun Nov-15-09 12:03 AM by OneAngryDemocrat
This poll is from a local area Illinois newspaper, the Sauk Valley Newspapers.

For several years, now, the Thomson Correctional Center, a super maximum security facility, has been sitting vacant.

The state of Illinois, additionally, has a budget deficit in the tens of billions of dollars - which is why the prison has been sitting empty.

The location where this prison is located has an unemployment rate of over 13%.

Bringing the Gitmo Bay detainees to Illinois would finally afford these prisoners their day in court, as well as bring needed jobs, and revenue to the area.

Support justice...

Support local jobs...

Support our President...

Scroll half-way down, and take the poll!!!

6. The area votes Republican...
...but the state does not.

Republicans will pooh-pooh ANYTHING the President does or supports.

I guarentee you that the Freepers will be also be invited to nudge this poll.

Don't let the win!

Local democrats won a lot of seats in this area last election - including former GOP Speaker Dennis Hastert's seat.

13. Sorry Charlie
but Illinois has been in the Federal prison business for quite a while now, becoming more so during the bush years. Just a few miles from me there is a federal prison where Ali al-Marri is held, sent there by the dear old george w. bush administration. Illinois had the most dangerous criminals housed in maximum security prisons here for years. I believe that only recently has other states began competing for this type of prisoner. Also, Iowa and Wisconsin will probably profit from the jobs offered since the prison is just across the Mississippi river from these states.

"The federal prison system currently houses approximately 340 inmates linked to international terrorism, including more than 200 tied to international incidents, the other Obama official said.

Of the total number, 35 inmates are housed in federal prisons in Illinois, including Ali al-Marri, who pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to provide material support to al Qaeda. Al-Marri is serving eight years and four months at the federal penitentiary in Marion, Illinois."

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/11/14/illinois.prison.gitmo/index.html

Another article on the situation.

"Thomson is not the only U.S. town that had hoped to lure Guantanamo detainees. Officials in Marion, Ill., Hardin, Mont., and Florence, Colo., also have said they would welcome the jobs that would be generated."

For fuck's sake, I lived less than a stone's throw from San Quentin for YEARS (at least, until it became too expensive!) ... If I could sleep soundly knowing Charlie Manson was right over the hill, people should be able to deal with the fact that the spooky 9-11 tur'rusts are safely locked up in jail cells, too. Fuck, Jeffrey Dahmer was put in a normal jail cell. None of those 9-11 guys ATE anybody, did they?

Seriously. If they're criminals, they should be treated like criminals, tried, and locked up. For good, probably.

But let's not pretend they're "too dangerous to have on American soil". They're don't have Muslim Super-Villain Powers. :eyes:

26. Can anybody tell me why all the high-end legal work goes to New York?
Funny how New York was never an option to house these guys, but the they get all the legal work that will come out of this.

Similar to how Obama forced GM and Chrysler to file for bankruptcy in NYC...

27. LOCAL PAPER SCRAPS LEFT-LEANING POLL RESULTS
The Sauk Valley Newspapers in North Western Illinois scrapped the recent poll which resoundingly showed that Americans wanted Gitmo Bay detainees to be brought to justice! It is OUTRAGEOUS that simply because the poll results didn't agree with the editor's pre-conceived notions on the topic!

They have now asked another question, in a new READER POLL, replacing the previous poll with it's left-leaning results (http://www.saukvalley.com/articles/2009/11/14/43879029/index.xml).

For several years, now, the Thomson Correctional Center, a super maximum security facility in North Western Illinois, has been sitting vacant.

The new poll looks like this:

29. Bring 'em on
I live in Illinois, and I, for one, would be happy for Illinois to serve the country in this capacity. We are patriots, unlike our fair weather friends on the right. A guarantee that a small, Midwestern town is one of the most secure places in America. Have you ever been to a small town? They can see an outsider coming from a mile away!
