Threat leads to arrest

BY ERIN RHODA
Staff Writer

11/14/2009

EMBDEN -- A man was arrested after he refused to let his wife and three children out of their home and threatened to commit "death by cop," police say.

The woman told police at 12:44 a.m. Friday that her husband was intoxicated and had a gun. He had stated that he wanted to commit suicide and that he hoped the police might help him do so, said Lt. Carl Gottardi, of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office.

Somerset County deputies and Maine State Police troopers surrounded the residence on Waugh Road. Then the state police's tactical team arrived to apprehend the man, Mark Walls, 31, and "hopefully minimize any injury occurring to the reported victims, husband and police," Gottardi said.

While police secured the scene and the tactical team members arrived, Gottardi sought and received a search warrant for the residence. The ambulance service arrived in case of a medical emergency.

Tactical team members arrested Walls outside his home shortly after 4 a.m. Police charged him with domestic terrorizing and obstructing the report of a crime and took him to Somerset County Jail. No one was injured.

3. i've had at least a dozen or more
almost exactly like that.

had one guy blow himself away 3 ft from where i was standing. in one, the guy came out of the house and pointed his rifle at a cop and got plugged. in all the others, they gave up

usually the people who commit suicide by cop DON'T tell people they are going to do it right before . the ones who do are less likely to actually do it.

4. Alcohol and an emotional irrational person with a gun
great combo.

Glad it ended well, send him away for a long long time.

5. "send him away for a long long time"
Is that really the best outcome?

What do we know about this guy? Was this the first time? Was his wife leaving him? Is he a chronic drunk? Has he always had guns? Is this a repeat behavior for him?

Sending Manson away for long time was a good idea. Sending Madoff away for a long time was a good idea.

This guy?

Maybe, maybe not.

6. He threatened his family with a gun
The reason he did this doesn't matter. He needs to be taken out of society for the benefit of everyone else. His own personal development can take place in place that is well regulated and safe for everyone else.

7. That is true. The issue is how long to send him away.
A year of intense treatment?

Ten years of punishment for a hopeless case?

I don't know and neither do you.
