MILLIONS OF AMERICANS FACE TERRIFYING PROSPECT OF RECEIVING
MEDICAL CARE
Calmly waiting to die while in bankruptcy may be the latest
beloved American tradition to meet its end.

With the U.S. House health-reform bill passed, millions of
fearful Americans are looking to the Senate to block legislation
that may forcibly remove one of their most treasured of all
American birthrights: receiving substandard health insurance,
and, for the lucky 48 million, no health insurance whatsoever.

For those freely denied health insurance today, the specter of
universal coverage is leading many to question what it even means
to be an American citizen.

Said one man at an anti health-reform rally, "My father and
his father did not have health insurance. They were free
Americans, who were proud to fight their cancer with God and
a little mash of bitter almond and royal jelly. I only hope
I can live to be 53 like both of them before the commie
Democrats force me to get screenings and other hocus pocus.
Live free or die, I say!!"

Other Americans, who have for decades enjoyed health
insurance riddled with loopholes, are clearly frightened
just to contemplate the possibility of dependable coverage.

"If there are no pre-existing conditions anymore, how do
I even know I exist?" cried one woman demonstrator, overcome
with emotion. "I - I've always been turned down because of
my hysterectomy. It's who I am!! Please don't take my identity
away from me, I beg you!!"

Citing these heartfelt concerns, Senator Joseph Lieberman
of Connecticut vowed that he would "do my level best to see
that the pleas of millions of patriotic Americans with
chronic health conditions that have remained untreated for
years due to our world-class insurance restrictions will
not go unheard. I hear you, and I hereby make this solemn
promise: no American will be forced on my watch to have
the option of choosing the comprehensive health insurance
or life that has been forced upon me and my colleagues in
Congress. Oh, and upon our unfortunate families.

"No one will be denied their inalienable right as Americans
to forget to list acne as a pre-existing condition on their
insurance forms and then be rejected by our finest insurance
carriers. How dare we as a legislative body deny these
rights to ordinary Americans just because we government
elitists and our elitist families are forced into full,
inexpensive coverage for life! This travesty of justice
will not happen with my vote, I assure you."

"That sounds good," said the woman clinging desperately
to her hysterectomy, "but will he stick to his guns, or
lose his nerve at the last minute? I am so skeptical of
Washington politicians, especially now that the House
has betrayed us."

2. Thanks for introducing me to Kate Heidel!
Her website is now bookmarked and I've just perused several of her other very funny essays. This is one of her best IMHO, though the truth of it is downright infuriating.

4. K&R - stellar site - Thanks!
I'm sending this on to my ultra rethug father-in-law. What shocks me about his never yielding republican stance on health care (and everything else), is he knows I'm prime for losing absolutely everything the next time my pre existing lands me in the hospital again for 3-4 months. He professes concern, calls to check on us, yet still insists on spamming me with all the insulting rightwing bs. It's gotten so disheartening, I put him and the rest of that side of the family on my auto-delete. I've pointed out to him many times, I'm been a life-long Dem. He thinks as I age, I'll 'be more like him' ... I told him, 'I sure as hell hope not.'.

6. People like that have a brain that is disconnected
from their ability to reason, and arguing with them is like "administering medicine to the dead" (quoting Thomas Paine.

I'm sorry for you, when that is people you otherwise love and care for.

7. I'll have a house full of that type here for turkey day
My sons and I are the only three progressives in our family on either side. Should be interesting, especially when someone asks why there's a bible included in our bathroom 'library' of cartoon books (Far side, Get Fuzzy, Calvin and Hobbes, etc...) but no where else in the house. heh Three atheists hosting 15 biblers.

It's the first holiday I've been physically able to host in about 4 years - the challenges are great, both physically and mentally. I suspect one of us (cough) will drink copious amounts of wine. *wink

9. I think we need a turkey day hotline for this.
Seriusly....

I promise to check in on Turkey Day if anyone needs talking down, but I do not promise to talk anyone out of banning their idjit kinfolk.
Mr. D and I are 2500 miles away from our respective families. Thank god.

I appreciate your situation, and wish you strength....:hi:

10. Fab idea.
The idea of them all being here has me ready to throw myself off the roof ... I'll limp my way up that damn ladder until the deed is done.

I have no idea why my family is so republican. We grew up dirt poor and have scratched our way out all our lives. Most of us have been on assistance at one time or another. I've never understood it. Heck, one of them even has a medical marijuana card, but they're totally anti Dem.

13. I think Colbert explained that cognitive dissonance best:
Remember, kids! In order to maintain an untenable position, you have to be actively ignorant.

16. Just found this and am laughing out loud. Ban alcohol and politics for the sake of peace,
and after they are gone drink all you want.
I wish you well, and you can IM me, if Dixiegrrrrl is busy, for a talking down if necessary.

18. Thank you so much, Mira
Are you the same Mira of the photography group?

I have been peeking in on the photography group for many months now. So much talent! I'm green with envy. I love to take photos, but my slim budget and physical limitations has thrown a kink in my desires. But I check in on the photo group weekly and drool. I absolutely cherish that group these days. I'm a floral designer by trade, but I was in an awful car accident a few years ago ... and well, without going into details ... I miss the artistic fulfillment. The photos in the group not only feed a little of that artistic yearning, but also give me a sense of hope and so much pleasure. I'm so grateful for the DU Photography Group. *heart*heart*

20. I'll start sending comments then.
I'm new here, so I wasn't sure what sort of hoops I needed to jump through to post to groups.

I do know there's an amazing depth of talent in that group and I would hope every DU member checks in and bathes in the beauty and wonder, the photographs capture. The group's photos have been a life saver for me and I'll be eternally grateful.

5. Don't worry, Kate, progressives will save the day....
...they'll defeat that bill, thereby cementing the status quo, will enable these people to enjoy the life to which they have become accustomed, at least for a few more decades.

11. Delicious!
A generous helping of truth, garnished with a pinch of Jonathan Swift and served with a sweet side of tongue-in-cheek.

And the people who most require its consumption have damaged taste buds that perceive the substance as too bitter for ingestion, a sad consequence of eating only those wings that grow on the right side of the bird. . .
